Which is the best type of HDMI converter for Nintendo Wii

9 posts in this topic

We’d like to use our Nintendo Wii again and connect to a newer OLED 4K TV. This is the current cable...

Is it best to get a converter where the coloured plugs fit into it or, a complete single cable fitting into the Wii and then directly into HDMI socket on the TV?  Any brand recommendations? Any advice much appreciated.

Dunno, we moved on from the Wii before it became an issue, but there is an article here:-

https://nerdtechy.com/guide-best-wii-hdmi-converter

I would say, don't go via the analogue cables (The coloured ones), go direct to digital.

A quick amazon search ( https://www.amazon.de/s?k=wii2hdmi&qid=1585121774&ref=sr_pg_1 ) finds lots including some of the ones mentioned in the article.

I would rely on your TV for the 'upscaling' from 480p to 4k because it's probably going to do a better job. Buy the cheapest one you can find from a vendor you are willing to trust, and just give it a go.

Also some youtube guy here  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4sRNu4Rkgs  suggesting that the HW build quality is pretty garbage but that it works well enough. So 'you pays your money you make your choice'.

I don't have a solution, but I can tell you that we bought one of those digital adapters in Amazon back in 2017 and it didn't work, I chose the one with most positive reviews.  Not sure why it didn't work.

What model and make of Oled?

It’s an LG, OLED65C8LLA.AEU 4K

We saw on some amazon reviews that some converters don’t upscale to full screen size....would the TV normally do that? Would be nice to have full screen if possible.

Thank you all...  @pappnase, we ended up ordering one of those garbage converters as they were available and, a 4K hdmi cable.  We’ll see what happens!

Why waste money on a 4K hdmi cable?    I reasonable quallity HDMI cable will cost about 7€...   The Wii doesnt support 4k..

Suppose I should put this in the "Emkay doesnt listen to a word I say" Folder

Just in case this helps anyone else...we bought these items from Amazon and the Wii works perfectly!

HDMI Adapter 11.95€ (I see the price has gone up to 14.95€ today).  As per the YouTube link that @pappnase posted, it is very basic though works fine.

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07Q37766X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

HDMI cable 7.99€. We bought the 4K though as @SpiderPig says, probably not really necessary to be 4K though cheap enough anyway and we needed it for something else.

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B004BEMD5Q/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

We are mindful not to order much from Amazon at this time though we needed some other items for working from home.
