How much Heizöl left on the tank?

I can't see the picture, but this is what I do:  Take a very strong light/torchlight and point it to it and figure it out where the current level is and make a guesstimate from there.

I would guess that whoever was there before you syphoned most of what was there and its almost empty, they would probably have ordered more when it hit the red.

I read the gauge in your pic as follows :

The white needle is showing that the tank is almost empty.

The red needle is just for your convenience.

You can move it around using the brass knob in the middle.

When the white (true value) needle passes the red needle, thats the time

to order more fuel.

It is currently set to half way. some people want to fill up only when they hit reserve.

Some like to keep a tank full. Your choice to set it where you want...

Maybe you move it to cover the white needle every month.

That way you see how much is used every month.

The torch trick (above) won't work as the tank appears to be steel.

Tapping with a blunt instrument as suggested by @SpiderPig may

show where the fuel really is.

The good news: the price of heating oil is fairly low at the moment, so now is a good time to fill up :)

Thank you all for the answers and suggestions. Now I know that the white needle is the real value. At least the forecast is that the oil price should be decreasing.
