I’m supposed to go on vacation tomorrow and completely understand the curiosity about asking what other people are doing in this situation. I’m trying to figure out what the most responsible thing is to do, but I don’t know the answer to that.

Keep updated on whay you decide!. May I ask- where to?

I read on the news about tourists visiting Vietnam.  They were asked to go for a "health check" after having been in an area where there was a case and they ended up being quarantined in a military hospital with bars on the windows.  They were not impressed with the cleanliness, number of working toilets, lack of toilet paper as well as the food which was rice with soya sauce 3 times a day.

If you are from China then most countries will now either not allow you into their country or test /quarantine you when you arrive. I returned from Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh) a week ago and unlike Europe there didn't appear to be any panic. Plenty of notices about washing hands, etc., alcohol hand sanitiser in hotels/shopping centres and I had my temperature tested once when entering a sandwich shop and once when checking in for my return flight but that was it.

With the situation now seemingly not being if you will get Coronavirus but when, unless you are going to Italy, South Korea or China or you are an at-risk person (old with underlying health issues) I am not sure if it makes any sense not to go on holiday unless the flights are cancelled or the country you are going to is quarantining people on arrival.

I have a trip to Japan booked in 3 weeks and unless things change (flight cancelled, cases there rise dramatically, people from Germany being quarantined) I am still planning on going.

That is to be expected.  You are not ill so your Reiserücktrittsversicherung will not kick in.

If the travel company cancels thats a completely different situation.

I'm under pressure from family to cancel my week's trip to Mallorca (which I was very much looking forward to) & won't see anything back.

I see chances that there will be a complete shutdown in a week or so & being stranded there is not always a good thing.

Germany is going to be soon blacklisted by many countries, so even if you manage to fly you would end up in forced quarantine in your destination.   Some South American countries already announced those measures for flights coming from China, Italy, France, Iran and Spain.   Even Hungary announced a ban from travelers from Italy and some other countries, they will take only their own citizens.

Germany is already blacklisted in USA and vietnam

So you will then cancel?

This is a big topic for me right now.  I am scheduled to fly to the US on 23 March, and return 30 March.  So far my flights are still showing as valid, and I am a US citizen so I am not banned from the US.  However, it is unclear whether there might be any sort of quarantine requirement, which would kill the purpose of my trip.

On top of that, the idea for US citizens seems to be similar for the ban on travel from China - focused on repatriation to the US.  I'm not repatriating.  The biggest question mark for me is not if I can get to the US, but whether there will be a return flight to DE available.  Thus far the airline's answer is, "we don't know."

Oh this is a thricky one!

I dont think even Usa knows what the ban and all that comes with it means?!

Is the embassy able to maybe clear the concerns?

I would think since things are changing by the hour there maybe are not clear answers either.

Work ir holiday? 😬

Fortunately or not the position of the German government is having an open-door policy.

For those flying to the States and you're not having any symptoms, fly into Dublin and go through the US Preclearance Facility at the airport in Dublin.  It is similar to that of a US domestic flight when you land.  No passport control.

I would say 80% full. We sterilized our arm rests, tray tables etc. before sitting down. Nobody near by was coughing. I'm still isolating.

So the ban against people from Europe entering the U.S. doesn't include Americans who live in Europe?

No. Citizens and permanent residents aren't banned but will be screened.
