Entering Germany with expiring passport

3 posts in this topic

Hi, can somebody please help me clarify the following?

My wife has an Aufenthaltstitel valid till 2022. Her passport is expiring in 2.5 months though. She has applied for a new one at the consulate of our country in Berlin and made an appointment at Bürgeramt to move her Aufenthaltstitel to the new passport. There is an urgent need for her to leave Schengen Area (before getting the new passport) and return when it will be about 1.5-2 months till the expiration date of her passport. Will there be any problems coming back? If yes, is there a way to do it right?

So when my wife was at the passport control going out of Germany she asked the officer and they answered that entering Germany is allowed until the last day of validity of the passport if the entering person has German residence permit.

Yes, that makes sense. Passport validity is an issue for non-immigrants because they are required to leave within a short period of time, but residents often don't have that constraint, and in your wife's case, 2022 is a long way away.
