Key word here - should.

I read another story today about a black person being shot and killed by a white cop in her own bedroom. Her crime - leaving her front door open while black. Does that mean that black people want black cops to start shooting white people? No.

Then am I "privileged" because no one shot me in my home yet?

That's not privilege. That's because you don't live in the U.S.

:)  That's one of the reasons I moved.  Although a "responsible gun owner" and second amendment advocate did accidentally blow a hole through the wall of a place where I worked.  That was about as close as I came.

Same old, same old, John. When a Dictator is having a few problems at home like failing economy, disquiet amongst the peasants or reduced popularity, they look for someone to blame or a focus away from the domestic problems. Galtieri did it in 1982 and we had the Falklands conflict. Idi Amin and Tanzania. Pinochet and Chili, constantly using Argentina as the enemy at the gates. There's loads more of course.

So true, French, and they held the World Cup in Argentina in 1978 amidst the dictatorship.

My favourite memory of that World Cup: Scottish fans before the match against the then Soviet Union raising the banner " Alcoholism versus Communism. "

:P

By the way, I had the chance to chat to the Honduran Ambassador to London whilst I was doing some research for my MA dissertation way back then. He told me he had met Galtieri the evening before the Argentinians sent their kids to the Falklands.

He had been in a meeting with Galtieri to negotiate arms sales to the Honduran Govt to fight the contras and he told me two things:

Galtieri was either drunk or stoned

Chilean soldiers were getting ready for a fight with Argentina but Galtieri had done the numbers. Chile ( as you pointed out ) had their own disputes with Argentina over territorial claims and it looked like the Chileans might have come off best.

By the by the way! I think ( if I sort of remember rightly..tough...) , according to some treaty of around 1903, the British Crown would be the adjudicator for disputes between Argentina and Chile!

Yes, hoops.

I am a massive believer in freedom of speech re opinions. But abuse against an individual is a different issue. Then there are times when it becomes, basically, a hate crime.

We have to be careful and vigilant, though. I have been to many countries where it is illegal to criticise the Government etc. That must NEVER happen in eg Britain, Germany, USA etc. Down road to Hell.

When this happens every single time, the behavior will have to change.

Has to be done, ignore it and you're condoning their abhorrent behaviour.

Don't be so sure.
