Peanut butter shortage - help!

66 posts in this topic

Here in Münster (NRW) I have not been able to buy the 'regular' kind of peanut butter (the unhealthy variety with added sugar and emulsifiers) for weeks. I have looked in every single supermarket within a 10km radius of where we live, and.. nothing. Is there some kind of embargo on peanuts coming in to Germany that I was not aware of???

Haha, thanks Anna. Glad to know I'm not alone in my pb shortage!

I had a suspicion it was to do with the daft orange racist in the White House..

Plenty of peanut butter here.  But I get the bio stuff in glass, and that does not tend to be from the US.  Crunchy and good tho.

I tried this one this morning, it is also produced in Europe. It is Erdnusscreme but has the same consistency as peanut butter, tastes ok, not as sweet as peanut butter, but still tastes pretty good.

Even in my small town the Edeka carries an 'American style' peanut butter that comes in a plastic jar and tastes exactly like Jif.  Take a look there.  Personally I miss fresh ground peanut butter that I could get at most stores in the US.

Your local bioladen will have that sort of thing.

Why not go to Enschede? Did you not know that only two countries eat more peanut butter per capita than the US? The Netherlands is one, Canada is the other.

The Dutch seem to have developed much more of a taste for peanut butter than the Germans ever did, maybe due to the Indonesian influence (even though peanuts are a South American crop...). Dutch shops have better peanut butters and more choice. Calvé is very very good IMO, even better than American crap filled with HFCS and other junk. Whenever I go to the Netherlands, I always buy peanut butter.

I was once stopped by a border guard on a train station platform. Went something like this: 'So where have you been today? What did you do there? Did you bring back any, ehm, souvenirs? Any marijuana, joints, hash?' Uhh, just peanut butter and Stroopwaffels. I proceeded to show him my backpack filled with 4 or jars of peanut butter and saté sauces, and other candy. Somehow the checkout ladies in the shops always knew I was a tourist... :D

Hi there,

If what you want is pure, unadulterated peanut butter try dm Erdnussmus. It really is just 100% ground peanuts with no additives at all and costs around €1,90 for 250 g.

The Crunchy version has sea salt, cane sugar and carrageen (I think), so don't bother with that.

Enjoy....

our local Penny has been out of PB for weeks, but the Netto ("orange Netto", not "Hunde Netto") nearby still has it.  I don't know if Netto has a different supplier or if Netto customers don't eat as much PB.

Amazon.de, folks.

As long as you don't hate Amazon as much as you love PB.

Already looked on Amazon, and again, the only stuff they have is the basket woven variety.

I'm talking about a grinder in the store.  There is nothing like really fresh peanut butter.

my recollection is that I ended up with one too many tubs of peanut butter that were rancid straight out of the grinder.  Not the fault of the grinder, obviously, but this is always a problem with "bulk food" - you don't know how long it's been there and especially with nuts, storing them loose like that, with so much exposure to air and light, they go rancid more quickly :(

anyway the solution to your problem is a bag of peanuts and a food processor.

and might I generally add:  I LOVE to say the word "erdnussmuss"

I don't know what that means but it looked to me like they had all sorts.

A bit of background: I used to be able to get Peanut Butter & co.'s Old Fashioned (Crunchy or Smooth) at small shops in Greece for several years (~2010ish to ~2016). Nothing but peanuts and salt. Once I tried that, there was no going back to any other peanut butter- the taste is unreal. But for some reason, you can no longer get this PB anywhere in Europe (only the ones with added palm oil, sugar and/or flavors).

My next favorite would be Smuckers Natural, and recently I tried and liked Laura Scudder's Natural (which might be the same thing?).

Anyway, after trying a few natural PBs in Berlin, I ended up with Bio Zentrale's erdnussmuss crunchy being my favorite. Not gonna lie, it's nowhere near as good as the ones above, but it is one of the most pleasant I have tried- fairly neutral taste.

Attached is a photo- you can also get it on amazon.de.

I'm all ready having second thoughts about giving Toytown my secret pb hookup, but here goes, my act of kindness for the month.  vekoop dot de sells monki chunky peanut butter (organic) for cheaper than anything you can find on amazon.  You can often find monki in denn's biomarkts and some other biomarkts around berlin.  you've got to stir it once, but I can deal with that for the killer deal.  You've got to buy 50€ of goods to get free shipping, so I just get 50 euro worth of pb.  I go through about a kilo a week.  fyi they cost 8.91€/kg at the time of writing.

Glad I/you asked ... same problem here in Düsseldorf.. at least in the 5 Km circle of my normal retailers.

What I took ( and still do) as a generic reply from Aldi ... when they have no info  "Delivery Problems " seems to be the reality!  Thanks to US Tariff Codes... we expats now suffer!!

I can get Calvé (Dutch) ...and it is a better PB than the unhealthy type I tend to eat regularly. Calve is too good for PBJ, but good on crackers or a spoon!!
