returning to Munich but this time with kids (8&11) and will be there for a week in July (2020)

wondering where people would suggest we base ourselves that is

easy to get into Munich proper for day trips

has at least one good local beergarden

activities like a lake or walks or cycling

OP- have you tried searching on TT search function ?  Also, Munich's tourist guide?  Munich experts will probably chip in, but  Munich and  most areas are very easy to get to.

Depends whether you want hotels, holiday flat, , whether you rent a car or want public transit.

If you're not going to have a car, look into bike rentals while you're here.

The outskirts are so lovely, and a bike will allow you to explore your surrounds and get off the beaten track.  There are loads of bike paths out there, so it's pretty great and very safe to have a bike.

Both sites are available in English. If you will be here for only one week you won't need any other ones.

www.muenchen.de

www.mvv-muenchen.de  This is the city's mass transit website.

If you want the bicycle part, a quick link is:     http://rad.mvv-muenchen.de/mvvbike/index.html#trip@enquiry

Plug in you start/destination, and you'll get three suggested routes:  the fastest, the greenest, and for the family. The coolest

part about this (IMHO) is that each route will tell you how many pieces of chocolate's worth of energy you've just spent

         biking each route.
