Where to buy Homebrew Equipment - Saarland

4 posts in this topic

I've been living in Saarbrücken since the fall, and I've been want to start making some wines/beers.

I learned how to brew while living in Ireland, moved back to the US and collected my own brewing stuff, and now here I am in Germany.

I brought some small stuff with me, like a siphon and airlocks, but I need a food-safe bucket with an air tight lid, at least 10 liters. I also need some demijohns/carboys.

These seemed to be not hard to find in Ireland and the US, but they are here. I looked at Bauhaus for the bucket and came up empty. I could always order off of Amazon, but those offerings were over priced and slim pickings.

Is there some other general type of store I should be able to buy a bucket at? What about Demijohns? What are these called in German? Also, anyone know of some good homebrew websites? I found a few but wasn't impressed.

Thanks!

I once tried making malt from barley but sadly found it tough going. I have a hop plant growing in my garden. I also have a wonderful organic grape bush.

www.Eimerzentrale.de - Manufacturer of lidded foodsafe buckets and tubs, regular buckets and boxes in all sizes and price ranges. NB: wholesaler and retailer price lists depend on whether you are consumer or B2B client.

The name Demijohn originally came from an old Rheinhessische mickeytake of the Napoleonic French during their occupation in a play on the German word Dämon (demon) and the mans name Jean as DameJean.

The regular German equivalent words are Glasballon or Korbflasche.

If you just want one or two used Demijohns put 'Glasballon Korbflasche Saarbrücken' into www.google.de and you'll get some links to current offers in kleinanzeige-ebay.de and other local ad sites.

You can get anything online at brouwland.de (although I think they are nl actually) or hopfen und mehr (https://www.hobbybrauerversand.de). and others. Since that is where many folks go to get ingredients, you just add on to an order.

But as you have already discovered, they are not super cheap. You can get individual components online at specialists (buckets, silicon tubing) just by searching. Demijohns from italian wine producers are generally cheap on ebay, or ebay kleinanzeigen.
