Heidelberg is a bit of a trek though but got it at Tiger and Dragon here.  But lots of Korean stuff available in Germany.  Google Korean shops in Germany for something more local.    Gochugaru was the name of the stuff I got.

Thank you for the information.

The reason my sister sends me a parcel every half year or so is that I need a very particular brand of skin care product. Since under 2kg all have same shipping cost, she usually add up stuff to make it 1.95kg. Previously it was clothes, dried seaweeds, bean paste, ... This is first time for her to send me paprika powder.

I try to avoid the Asian store in this city. Once I was buying a particular brand (I think I am not that flexible) of bean paste, and it was the last 1 or 2. I noticed the expiration date is only a week later. So when I was checking out I complained about it, not angrily. The woman said: you still have a week. She said that with such indifferent  face. I bought it (usually foods can be consumed a bit after expiration), but decided avoid the store. There is another Asian store open, I will try it later.

The shop owner is fully within their rights to sell that product, you have absolutely no right to complain regardless and then you avoid the store, you should really try and stop being so judgemental.

Why didn't you just ask (politely) if they have some more in the stock room as the last 1 or 2 on the shelf are nearing their best before date.

Have you ever heard the saying, Politeness costs nothing but gains everything?

I did not explain to you that it is not daily food, that you would consume within a week or so. It is a pack of seasoning which people would use for a month at least. It is very salty, average person would use it for 2 months.

It was not real complaint. At least I am never aggressive without sufficient reason. I said it with not so happy or sad face.

Would you think about it a moment if your saying me "judgmental" truly judgmental?

Did you know what bean paste is before you make such judgment that I am judgmental?

Of course I asked. Isn't that so natural thing to ask when you so much want to buy the item? They told me they do not sell the brand any more.

I am sorry my post seems to have triggered your adrenal glands to secret excessive cortisol. I am not sure if you are ware of that cortisol suppresses your immune system and decreases bone formation. And your increase of cortisol has no any effect on me whatsoever.

He probably thinks that one can just gobble up bean paste in one sitting. Lol. You are right, although it is still edible since there is still a week before expiration date, it would be a hassle to make sure that you consume it under a short amount of time. Even supermarkets that put items on angebot, they do it with perishable goods that usually expires within over 1 month or more, not a week.

Also, best before dates are not the same as not edible after.  Different than "consume by".   Especially a salty fermented product like this is likely to be fine and taste so for a great deal longer.  Same with Miso.

Yes, that is why I bought it anyway.

But it was quite surprising to be told so by the store owner, right?

"Best before" itself says if I consume it after the date, it is not best, and any seller would not encourage it, right?

At least it was not a professional way of responding a light complaint from a customer.

Of course, she did not force me to buy anything, and it was my choice to purchase, but I did not like their philosophy of running the shop.

I've thought about it for a second and yes you were being judgemental and it's not the first time in this thread either. You have done so in one or two of your many many other threads you have started.

Trying to turn the tables and making me look the idiot isn't going to work..

As for beanpaste I expect you mean Doenjang which I have a tub of it and use it for my Twice cooked Crispy pork belly stock and the marinade and also for jjigae amongst other things. I also have a number of other Korean products, I can list them if you want, including Paprika which is readily available in a number of Asian shops here in Berlin.

I, too, was wondering if it was a sell by date or a use by date.

I was thinking that thought about this entire posting.  The dialog puts  David Mamet  to shame.
