Tweet about gender neutral toilets stirs controversy

Admin note: apologies for the half-assed title, but I was annoyed to have to manually split this topic.  I guess "thanks" for the tag @chooyo but it would have been better to report the first post in the off-topic crap so that ALL the mods had a crack at spending what felt like an eternity clicking on little boxes.  Since I'm annoyed and over it now, you guys pick a decent title.  That is all. --dessa

Outspoken Trump supporter Kaya Jones said this when visiting a place that had gender neutral toilets.

I’m not being mean, I’m being honest. Science ? shows us two just 2 not 58 genders. XY and XX. A hermaphrodite is an exception and usually a parent/parents are forced to chose for the child which they will live as. That’s all. There’s only two sexes people. Science gotta love it.

Seems to be a theme with Trump fans, not being mean just honest. (sic) Or maybe they're just stupid and thick skinned.

Your OWN bathroom is gender neutral you fucking idiot.

Settle down, hoops! Are you saying only Trump fans are asking questions about gender neutral toilets? Come on, mate. That is being too politically biased, isn´t it?

What about Socialists in Bolivia outside the capital, Liberals in Liberia in villages, Conservatives in Japan at the temple? etc etc

Surely much more complex than just the orangeman´s thoughts/supporters/memes?

Settle down, mate!

( When my daughter was about 6 or 7, we ended up in Hyde Park at the café and she needed " to go " and I had no idea which toilet to take her into...ended up at the gent´s, I remember..)

She also writes she doesn´t want men in her toilet/bathroom. OK!  Who am I  to hassle in that regard?

( Not that I´ve always been sober and found the right door..)

Too political your side, babe.

She is also really young..think back to your own twatishness...I surely messed up thousands of times..bet you did, too...

Not HER bathroom, it's public. And her argument wasn't about safety, but there only being two sexes.

Will talk to my dog, Max, hoops.

But why the argument about there being only two sexes? Maybe there are, maybe there aren´t. But why Trump-fixed? Bolivian Liberals outside the Capital etc?

This was her previous post.  Would it bother you if a neutral gender had used the toilet before you?

How would you feel about your child using this bathroom?

If this is all about kids safety, I suppose it's about protecting little girls from male predators. So what about boys?  Should boys use the ladies in order to get the same protection?  And if yes, up until what age?  Because once a certain age has been reached, you do have men in the ladies room again, you know :)

What about the older guys that head off to Thailand... Shall we protect them from "babes with bollocks"?

Life is full of choices...

I take on board your point Leon, but a sign on a toilet door won't stop a predator.

Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I took her comments to be typical Trump type bullshit.

The Bible says yadda yadda yadda.

I'm not sure if the Bible says anything about separate bathrooms but yes, there is some talk about what God created or didn't create.  I have someone on my facebook who is an avid Christian (and Trump supporter).  She recently posted something about some state now allowing gender on birth certificates as being listed as just X that she was appalled and that "God chooses your gender".  So I guess intersex people were created by someone else?  I'm not sure how to read that.

However, this is a person who had bought an assault rifle in order to defend her home from "terrorists".  When I replied to her that the terrorists most likely will not be interested in invading her home, her friends all chimed in that I was right, she needed to get a handgun and carry permit.

As for the safety of children, it is absolutely possible that the predator just ignores the sign on the door.  Didn't we have a case here in Germany a few years ago where a girl was molested in the bathroom of her school by some stranger who'd walked into the school and went into the girls room and just waited?

I won't get into a discussion about gender-neutrality bad or good but about toilets, I will have a say. I really don't get why everyone seems to take it for granted that "gender neutral" toilets are a good thing, or why you're an idiot if you don't agree.

A public toilet is not the same as your private toilet at home. I really don't want to share a public toilet -- with stalls -- with men, strangers, and I would have thought most women don't either. Women like to stand at the mirrors putting on makeup etc (not me, I don't wear makeup) but much worse is they sometimes change clothes there. I have often changed clothes in a public restroom -- especially on long haul flights from Asia to Europe. I don't want men in there.

Then again, I would have thought that men prefer toilets with urinals. Do these gender neural toilets have urinals or not? If so, do women really want to walk past men pissing? If not, do men really want to join long queues with women to use stalls for a quick pee?

If men use stalls to pee they will leave the seats up. They will also leave the doors open most likely.  They will also leave urine splatters on the floor. Does anyone really want to walk in urine splatter? This is why German housewives campaign to get men to sit! And it's possible to keep your private toilet floor clean and free of splatter, not so a public one.

So I don't why Hoops assumes that gender neutral toilets are so wonderful. Really, nobody cares about your gender when using a toilet. They care about your sex; using a toilet is a sex-based, body based thing, we do it differently and there should be two kinds of toilets, for privacy and hygiene reasons. Also for the protection of young girls who are usually really shy about these things, and do need protection from guys. Young boys too, maybe.. Also Indian ladies, Middle Eastern ladies, they are all very shy (and also change clothes a lot in restrooms) and I'm sure they don't want to share. This is assuming of course that this gender-neutral-toilet trend goes global, which I'm sure it won't!

There, I said it! Go after me! ;)

The reason the PC people are backing gender neutral toilets these days is the growing group of people who don't identify as a binary gender.  Regardless of anybody's opinion on those people, I think we can all agree that they also need to answer the call of nature sometimes, preferably without getting security or police called on them because they are in the "wrong" bathroom according to somebody's opinion.

So the PC crowd says lets just have gender neutral bathrooms and the problem is solved while the religious right are of the opinion that God gave us two genders and those people should just damn well dress and behave according to the letter it states on their original birth certificate.  Added, the religious right also bring in the focus on children as young girls will be put at risk having to use a gender neutral toilet as well as allowing transwomen (who sometimes look kind of masculine) in the ladies room will make it easier for predators to sneak into the ladies by wearing a dress.  However, nobody seems to care much about the safety of boys who have to use the mens room or the safety of transwomen who might be banished to the mens room as well.  In which case I guess that transmen might be banished to the ladies and will be free to ogle women, leave the seat up and pee on the floor.

I don't necessarily think that gender neutral bathrooms are the solution for all but if bathrooms have to be gender segregated, there should be a 3rd safe option like a separate single stall toilet somewhere else although some might say banishing the "other" to a separate toilet would be further marginalizing an already very marginalized group.

I'm happy for them to answer the call of nature in a secure way. But it should not be at the expense of the privacy, intimacy and security of women and girls, who have really had  to fight for their private spaces and shouldn't be bullied into sharing with male bodied people , And I am not the religious right. There are more than two sides to this discussion.

Here goes. I am menopausal people. There is blood involved. Sometimes lots of blood. I need access to water. It can be visibly messy. I still feel embarrassed despite my advanced age. I certainly do not want men seeing this. That's why I love those cubicles for wheelchair users that have their own hand basin.

And what about mothers cleaning up their baby's bottoms? Do they want male strangers peering over their shoulders? Do men want to see this? It is about our dignity. As well as safety.

I think you all have valid points.

I kind of think, go into the toilet that YOU want.  I don't care what you bits look like, how you use them.  If you want a bit or privacy then the cubicles are available (maybe we should only have cubicles?)

But, of course there are people who would abuse this and this then this causes problems and is a threat to others so that doesn't work either.

So I don't know what the solution is.  As a man, that is a difficult thing to admit!!

I strongly agree that this proposed "gender neutral" encroachment into womens' and girls' intimate space is simply unacceptable.

Along with judgements from men as to the manner in which women and girls should tend to their bodily needs.

Irony with regard to the discussion of women and girls toilet needs and the unfortunatley pejorative nature of topic title aside, I am wondering whether the topic title is actually accurate? Or perhaps people are posting on the wrong thread?

'In his book  Filthy English, linguist Peter Silverton asks "Can you distinguish an utter twat from a complete prick? I think you can. An utter twat knows not what he or she does. A complete prick does."'

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twat

For those posting above on activities/actions where they believe there is a deliberate intent / agenda lying behind, perhaps they should start a "Prick of the day" thread instead.

Obviously, only if they are "man" enough to get their insults in order.

You cannot change your clothes in a cubicle. Well, I suppose you can but it's awkward.

And nobody has yet answered the question: are there urinals in these "everybody can use them" restrooms?

Going into the toilet that YOU want is not an option if it disturbs the privacy and dignity of others. But I guess men aren't bothered ovemuch.

Well that is also kind of what I said that this was probably not a solution and that maybe we should only have cubicles.
