Göttingen is near kassel , a very largely student populated city and i'm sure you'll find lots of people who can speak good English, good hunting and good luck.

Hello Christine,

I am moving to Goettingen in March next year. I'm a British woman currently living in Switzerland. We've been here for nearly 4 years and moved here because of my husband's company restructuring. They like restructuring so much that they're doing it again and this time it's to Goettingen. I'll be coming up in the next few weeks to sort out accommodation so perhaps we could meet for coffee?

Göttingen is a university town in Niedersachsen, about half an hour south of Hannover with the ICE.

Hello, I'm a 25 year old British guy living in Kassel. I haven't found many English speakers here (well, I've found two) but I'm looking for more! I've been to Goettingen a couple of times - they've got a cinema there next to the Church that sometimes does English-language films...

So say hi :)

There are about 100 Americans on an email list for Göttingen. Send an email to Howard (howard@schultens.net) to get put on this list. About 15 people show up on the 2nd Friday of each month at a bar/restaurant (currently it is Zak's but check with the email list to find out if it has changed. There are also about 70 American university exchange students at any given time. There is also a group called Democrats Abroad which has about 100 members in the Göttingen area (http://www.democratsabroad.org/group/germany). I am trying to get an English chilren's playgroup regular and large enough to be self-sustaining. The Americans email list has occasional special activities (Thanksgiving, 4th of July).

I know a couple Irish and British people, but I know of know organized activities/groups for them. Mostly the native English speakers are hard to locate other than the few things I mentioned above.

Hi, i am currently pursuing my thesis in a small town close to Göttingen, actually a 45 mins train journey away from Göttingen. But keep coming to Göttingen often. Anyone interested in meeting up for Dinner or drinks on Fridays or Saturdays??? Have been in this small town now for a little over than 2 months and the social life here is next to nil.

So, interested people put up ur replies here and seeing how many people are interested we can decide upon the meeting place and time later.

cheers

Hi,

I have just moved to Gottingen with my fiancee and are definitely interested in meeting other english speakers in the area!

It seems that they are pretty difficult to find from google!! Get back in touch if you would like to meet up.

Cheers

Craig

Send email to Howard Schultens (howard @ schultens . net) and he will put you on one or both of the two lists for Americans in the Göttingen area. I don't think there is an equivalent way to contact losts of English speakers from other countries. There is a Baptist church here with an English speaking congregation, a cricket team at the university, workers at Max Planck Institute (English is the company language), and that seems to be it at the moment. Otherwise the English speakers tend to assimilate into the surroundings.

PS. We have a 14 month old son, so if you are still trying to get a play group together let me know. We would be interested in meeting some other mums and dads.

Hi,

I'm part of an informal group here in Göttingen of english-speaking moms with babies. We usually get together a couple times a week or so. Send me a PM and we can meet up.

There are two, somewhat competing, English playgroups in town. To the best of my knowledge, the one Geldar referenced is appears to be all women with babies, the other (the one I referred to earlier in this thread) is gender neutral and has toddlers and babies. Someday, I hope the two will merge, because IMO, both are too small to be self-sustaining without a lot of effort on the organizer's part, but we'll have to see how things evolve.

I've just opened a cafe to fill these needs. More info is at:

English Speaking Expats Cafe in Göttingen

And if you are Irish or of Irish decent, be sure to stop by tomorrow afternoon (Apr 2)'s celebration of the arrival of Guinness on Tap. All Irish drinks are free for the Irish, with discounts given for partial credit. ;-)

Am looking for an english native speaker in/around göttingen who is interested in joining us (3 native speakers) in playing social bridge. We are over 70 years old, have played for years (for fun, not competition), play generally once a week for 3 - 4 hours in some local restaurant or pub (of late in la romantica near badeparadies). If interested, please contact me via email: walterhansbeck1950@gmail.com.
