Hey, there is a VRR or VRS ticket. It's really cheap if there are 5 of you. Check it out.

Go to a football match.   The football ticket itself can be had very cheap and your travel in NRW is included.   You have a lot of choice in this area, also Leverkusen, Mönchengladbach, Schalke etc.     I've had nice days travelling from e.g. D-Dorf to Leverkusen, seeing a football match then the rest of the day there and then back to D-Dorf...all for 15 Euro.   It is also how I tend to deal with "stuff to do in Frankfurt" rather than paying the 20 Euro return from my town.    (Pick an early one because it lasts still the end of the day.)

Fine a mate with a season ticket because they can usually take someone offpeak for free.

Sometimes the transit authorities do offers, I think like over Xmas they sometimes offer it cheaper.

Technically these tickets are only supposed to be for travel to/from the event.

So if you get caught on the opposite side of the Verkehrs region, travelling in the wrong direction, or travelling at a totally unsuitable time then you could be deemed as not having a valid ticket and be issued a fine.

Plus you need a suitable event on the day, and there is not a football match every weekend of the year.

It has been a while since I lived in the region, but one option might be a Ticket 1000.  It will cost around 123 euros/month for Preisstufe D (you need to check if this is correct) but this can then be used to get around the whole region and give you more flexibility, although you might have to double check if it is valid to Cologne or not.  The exact price varies depending on if you need one valid before or after 9 am and if you have a abo or not/

Otherwise, if you simply do 1 trip a week to Dusseldorf then a simple 4er ticket for Preisstufe D should cost around 55 - 60 Euros (?).  If you just go to Dortmund then you will probably just need a Preisstufe B ticket(?), so that would be cheaper.

You need to check the exact Preisstufe you need, as I think this has changed since I lived in the region.
