This is not malware or a bug.

I get a lot more pop-ups during video play, sometimes mid-session, which is annoying, I am using Firefox on AFTV and dedicated  youtube app it happens  a lot more these days.

The reason that this happens, is that youtube are getting paid to show the  ads, mid way through a video ( to make a bit of money ).  I can see no way around it, if you want no ads, you have to find another streaming site either free or paid.

See https://marketingland.com/is-youtube-serving-up-more-pre-roll-mid-roll-video-ads-243505 for more info

I´ve been using the app as well as a browser. The problem is occuring on one cellphone only, not on other android devices. This makes me think that there must be a problem with just that one cell, not a general problem with youtubes advertising policies.

maybe, but it says in the above links, that they analyze , you browser history and your logged googlemail account to decide which ads you will get, maybe you browse and or different things on different devices, or maybe some are set to auto-clean on shut down.

I get ads thrown at me on all different devices - that I use regularly   - I did not find a way to pay to get rig of the ads either.

Its annoying, because sometimes I can watch a lot on Youtube.

Im not convinced that this is indeed standard youtube behaviour.  The problem as described is that chrome is opening to show adverts -- this is not what YouTube does, it shows adverts as part of the video.

There are various malware that do exactly what is described so its not too far fetched to think that this is what is happening.

I am not fully up to date on android security but there are various specialised apps for detecting and removing this kind of malware.  As an example "Ad Detect Plugin" which claims to do so.

Yes, on my other devices I also get some youtube ads, but they are by far less harrassing. They show within the youtube app and usually you have the option to skip after 3 seconds. However, on this device 10 or so chrome windows open up and youtube will stop.

That is quite clearly malware.  If you cannot fix it any other way, you may need to do a factory reset, which is the nuclear option and Id try everything else first but is a last line of attack.

You can´t uninstall chrome. So I went for Zwiebel´s nuclear option and reset to factory settings.
