How to find jobs working from home?

7 posts in this topic

Hi

I am seeking work either in English, German or both in a remote environment. Are there any sites, etc where one can apply for positions. Is it difficult to find work from home in Germany? I am looking to work 20 to 30 hrs, occasional weekends. I have an up to date CV.

Many thanks

Shanei

What's your profession?   Options are often quite dependent on that.   In general, quite a few professions are becoming more location independent.   I just do home-based contract work at the moment.

It's not at all technically difficult now.  Technology is stable and inexpensive, connectivity via Skype etc makes communication easy, as do shared systems where needed (clients' email, document systems etc).

If you can add in a small capacity to be mobile (to go to a meeting when needed etc) then your options will widen.

What is your profession? A roofer or elementary teachers will obviously have difficulties working from home ... In addition, you want to work part-time as well as at home. That doesn't make it any easier. It is often the case that employees arrange to work at home with their employers - or work at home on certain days and on others in the company.

A large car manufacturer in Stuttgart even encourages employees to work from home at least one day a week ... Employees from the administration of course, the workers on the assembly line are bad at it.

In IT you can work more and more from home, but personally I prefer an office environment which offers more structure in my daily work and a better infrastructure plus direct contact with colleagues.

Depending on your skill, you could try freelance sites like upwork.com, then all of your work would be from home. You'll probably end up working for bottom dollar (at least to begin with).

Yes, everyone has their preferences.    I actually stopped running a "home office" and dismantled it.   I try to keep  my home for personal now as much as possible.   I use third spaces, quite a lot of which are free (like University libraries)  or co-working ones, which are now quite cheap.

I do miss things like the recognition and so on.    I do something really good, like agree a national level deal with a government and, in an office, that'd be acknowledged.    Now, it's just on to take the bike in to get it serviced, or go to supervise an examination, or equivalent mundanities :).   It also means that people like neighbours don't really know how hard you hit career-wise etc,  certainly no idea what I've done sitting here over the years.  If I had trawled into a big  name in Frankfurt for years. they'd have a different view of me.   (It is also one reason I liked the English teaching here, far more hands on).
