Converting NY License into German DL

9 posts in this topic

Hi

I have been living in Muenster, Germany since 2016 and need to get a german license. I have a NY license, which I believe is not reciprocal. What are the requirements and steps I must take to proceed?

Many thanks

Shanei

Ring up a driving instructor. Pay them a fortune for lessons.

Pass test. Job done.

Yo! I'm also living in Münster and literally just got my german license yesterday (I'm from MN, partial reciprocity, only had to take the theory without going through a fahrschule). I'm pretty sure that NY has no agreement so you need to do everything... but you can always email the führerscheinstelle (include a picture of your license) and they will tell you exactly what you need to do

get a time machine and get a license from a reciprocal state prior to your first visit to the Einwohnermeldeamt.

Hi. I have an old, expired CT license from where I grew up. Would that still be valid or not? I also have the actual test and driving lessons record to show the amt if necessary. Would it be possible then to have reciprocity?

No, that makes no sense.

No, they don't exchange expired licenses.  Not even EU.  I know an Italian whose license had expired and he had to go back to Italy to deal with it.

an expired document is never valid.

Also, Connecticut is only partially reciprocal.

further, I don't think you can successfully argue CT = NY therefore NY = Germany.  NY is reciprocal or not, and it's not.
