Driver's License - Been in Germany since 2012.

7 posts in this topic

I have been living in Germany since 2012 and I need to get my Driver's License.

In the past I have had Driver Licenses in Ohio, Tenneesee and my current one is New York.

However, I have not lived in the US since 2012.

I know I am probably stuck taking the test and driving test, because my last Driver License was from NY.  I do have family in Ohio, so I am curious if I were to change my license to Ohio if that would make things easier?

Or if I applied for an International Drivers License if that would change anything?

I just feel descriminated against for having lived in NYC.  Just because I lived there and my last Driver Licsense was from there (it has been renewed) that I am stuck taking the full set of tests, while people from other states get off easy.  It is so annoying and totally unfair.

I get it though.  It is probably because of the number of accidents in various states.

Since OH has full reciprocity, consider getting an OH license again if you're going to be there, and show that along with your driving record IF the record doesn't show that you exchanged it for a NY or TN license. If it does, you might be SOL...

You have 3 years after establishing your residency to convert your drivers license.  Also you must present a US license that was issued before your residency.  In either case you are out of luck.

the three year rule is simply no longer true. I don't know why you keep posting misinformation about this here.

The 3 years limit was removed so long ago that I don't even remember when it happened.

I'm currently going through this process with a Minnesota license (partial reciprocity). Mine has been renewed since I've been here but they did accept an old one that I still had which was expired. I'm in Münster, and it seems like there aren't many expats here -- the people at the Führerscheinstelle didn't really seem to know what they needed from me. If you happen to still have a copy of an expired Ohio license and it's easy enough to switch your current one to Ohio again, that might be worth a try. But it might be that the people at your Führerscheinstelle won't accept an expired + current license as proof.
