Brexit preparations for brits - replace bank cards now etc???

Based on the current political situation in the UK, I would say a hard Brexit is now very much on the cards.

 

So Brexit happens on 29th March 2019, which makes all Brits illegal on the 30th March in the case of a hard Brexit.

 

Does anyone know what we should do the day after Brexit? 

 

Quit job so not to be working illegally?

 

Go to the ABH?

 

Do the ABH give a work permit immediately or do we need to wait?

 

Get on the next flight back to the UK.

 

At the moment it looks like Hard Brexit deal will be done.

In all likelihood, any employer of size and substance will already have plans in place at the HR level. In a large company, for example, Siemens, the best plan is to visit or contact the HR department. Naturally, the value and uniqueness of your particular skill set will determine if a company will care enough to try to salvage your job. Companies that are facing layoff plans in some sectors may use this a way to reduce force without penalty leaving open jobs for employees not affected by Brexit.

I would be very surprised if companies had a Brexit plan in place. There are not so many Brits employed in Germany multi national companies.

 

At the end of the day I need to pay the bills for both my wife and daughter. I am not so much bothered about me as I am about my family.

 

Is it worthwhile looking for a job in the UK (1st April), economy will probably tank by then so probably not much luck there.

 

Now the really messed up part, I also spoke to someone who works in the Finanazamt about this and they said that if I work abroad but leave my wife and daughter in Germany, my taxable income should be taxed in Germany. So Germany does not give me a work permit after 30th March but they want to tax my income from abroad. Something does not sound right.

But your main centre  of life would be where your family is- so you may have to choose where you and family live? Like other 3rd country nationals.

A Hard Brexit (a very real possibility) is very different from 3rd country nationals.

 

In the space of 24 hours, Brits will be illegal.

 

My family will stay in Germany,  but after a Hard Brexit I might not be able to support my family and will need to look further away for a job. When I find a job and survive the probation period maybe my family can join me.

You have been on this forum long enough to know that you can get your visa through your marriage to your German wife and therefore retain your job since you have a right to be here. You're working yourself up over nothing. Just change your visa from whatever it is now to a family unification visa. Geez. Here I thought I would finally be rid of your whiny little butt.

They won't kick you out for that. Stop worrying. Go to the AB and tell them what's up. Get your Berechtigungsschein for DAF classes and go nights to classes. Seriously, you're worrying yourself, and probably your wife, over nothing.

The only precautionary measures that I've thought of are...

 

Change UK driving license to a German one if intending to stay in Germany long term.  The process now is easy and low cost...approx 30-40€.

 

Get any UK banking etc set up for online access.

 

Check UK private pension details.

 

Check UK state pension...maybe opt to top up as the current maximum weekly payment requires 35 years contribution, not the former 30 years. Anything under (over 10 years I believe) is paid pro rata.

 

If you are a UK private landlord/lady, consider the likelihood of affordability should your rental income be liable for German taxation if the UK personal tax free allowance no longer applies.

 

Get any UK policies/accounts....insurance, pensions, shares, premium bonds etc updated with your German address.  Most accept postal address changes...some have to be done in person in the UK.

Regarding the language issue, my wife has a colleague who did an engineering degree in Bremen or some such and he was given his family visa without having taken the Integrationskurs. I'm sure the AB will extend any similarly situated person the same courtesy.

Doesn`t it depend on what ABH you go to ?

You are such a drama queen!

 

As the father of a minor unmarried German child you are entitled to a permit even without A1 German.

 

For you the worse case scenario is that you apply for a permit under the AufenthG.

Yes, but I assume this will take time.

 

I will lose my EU rights inside 24 hours.

 

On the 30th March 2019 can I really just continue to work?

Will the ABH give me a permit the very same day?

 

I have time now to decide what to do, the closer March 29th 2019 comes the less time I will have.
