How to relinquish U.S. citizenship when getting German citizenship

3 posts in this topic

I'm a U.S. citizen married to a German citizen. I intend to fulfill my residency requirements and apply for German citizenship and I do NOT want to retain my U.S. citizenship. Can I expect that the act of becoming a German citizen - and stating that I do NOT wish to be a dual citizen - will automatically trigger my U.S. citizenship to be RELINQUISHED, or will I still have to take steps to formally RENOUNCE my U.S. citizenship? (I have not found an answer to this in other Toytown posts or in Google searches)

Relinquishing, as opposed to renouncing, used to be free. Now they're both $2,350 as they apparently entail the same paperwork and processing.
