Registering a marriage in Germany

9 posts in this topic

Hello everyone,

I am in desperate need of help from your side and I really hope someone will be able to direct me as I am simply clueless.

Two weeks ago I married my then-boyfriend in Romania (we are both EU-nationals) and we were given a marriage certificate written in 3 different languages (English, French, Romanian).

I've been spending my last two days looking everywhere about how to register our marriage in Germany and I have no idea where to start.

To simplify everything, I took his name and we both have the same family name at the moment. ( no hyphenation or anything similar - pretty straightforward) I also changed my ID and currently waiting for my passport.

I know I need to go to Standesamt or Einwohnermeldeamt? When I did my Anmeldung, I booked a Termin here:  https://service.berlin.de but I am currently incredibly confused as I don't know where to book an appointment anymore.

So my question is if anyone is so kind to help me regarding this, where do I book the appointment for declaring to the German authorities that we are married now? I have a feeling that once I'll have the link where to book the appointment, I'll also have a list of the papers I will need.

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it!

Why do you want to register your marriage ?

If you want to register your marriage for Tax reasons you can take a translated copy to the Finanzamt ?

@franklan

Thanks for the link! It's a lead to begin with. Someone also suggested using this link: https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/120702/ - is there a difference?

@RenegadeFurther

I understood that for tax reasons my husband's company will handle the situation with Finanzamt. I am currently unemployed.

I was thinking that the marriage needs to be registered here as well for some reason, hence the confusion. I also did my Anmeldung with my old name at the house where I currently live, so will I simply need to do a new Anmeldung for my name to be updated?

There's also the issue of being co-insured on my husband's health insurance until I find a job here, which I think will only be possible once the marriage is registered here.

@Brockman

This has definitely helped me put things into perspective! I saw the topic, read through it initially but I was still missing essential information hence why my confusion.

As far as everything goes, the marriage registration is not vital ( https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/318966/ ) but could definitely be useful in the future and when needed to provide proof of our marriage to a German institution. So first, I can go there, register the marriage as it is and then, make another appointment for the Meldebescheinigung beantragen ( https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/120702/). This will basically do the new Anmeldung and I will get to change my name.

Thanks a lot for the other link! I think I'm all good for now and it's all clear. Just another quick question if possible, do I need to fill any forms or just going there with all the paperwork will be enough?

Resurrecting this thread as I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to get my tax status changed after getting married a couple months ago. My husband and I got married in the UK and I'm not really bothered about having the marriage registered here, unless there's a specific benefit to it? (Neither of us is German, I'm not changing my name, we're not having kids, and don't think we'll stay here forever.)

What's confused me is changing the tax class as I've read conflicting information. Do I need to register our marriage to do this? Or can I just fill out the tax class change form and take that along with our marriage certificate to the Finanzamt?

We are moving flats in October, so if it's possible to just register at our new address and change our marital status at the same time, maybe that's easier?
