Both my eyes deteriorated suddenly five years ago at the tender age of 55. Diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes. Had both lenses replaced within a week. I now wear reading glasses for a book held in front of my face, and glasses for driving (which I did anyway).

 

Five years on I still have no problems reading my phone at normal arm's length or typing this on a desktop. I'd guess my new vision without glasses is between 30cm-100m which is all I need outside the reading/driving thing.

 

Or... maybe I now have...

I an feeling fine now and at home ( back to the hospital for a check up tonorrow).

What times were had in the hospital yesterday and today!

Got there at 9, sent straight away to the Aufnahme office for a questionnaire. The lady kept my jacket and bag in her office. " No rooms free at the monent. We will let you know. Please wait in room number bla bla bla. Quickly got called in to the doc, eye drops, please wait again in the room, more eye drops.

I was sitting in the room and a man of my age said something and I answered. Then he asked " are you English?"

"Yes, I am."

" My wife is from Kent and we got married in 1978. I live in a village called Hittfeld."

 

Moi: " ah, do you know Haus Eddelsen? I used to be a trainer for Shell there several times a year about 30 years ago."

 

" I live 200 metres from there. New name now. I used to have a great trainer. I worked for Unilever."

 

Moi: ( wild guess!).. did he happen to be Patrick W.?"

He: yes! We're old friends. We met in 1985."

 

Moi: " I've known Patrick since 1986. He was my boss in Indonesia. We've lost contact."

 

He: I will WhatsApp you his details."

( Update this afternoon- have reestablished contact with Patrick!👍👍👍👍)

 

A bit later, I was called to a changing room to get undressed and put on a gown.

I still had no room but was wheeled to the theatre. While the doc was getting ready, his assistant spoke to me in German and I asked if she was Greek!

 

She said no -German from Hamburg. " Warum fragen Sie?"

" You have a bit of a Greek accent speaking German😂"

 

Then she lightened up a bit. " I lived in Greece for seven years."

Moi: " kannste mal sehen!"

 

Then the business took place. Short operation and I was wheeled back to the waiting room.

 

About two hours later, I was asked to go into room 255 or whatever. Two beds in there. I thought " not what I expected but ok, I suppose."

Then another came in ( not what he expected)

 

Then, he disappeared for a while and a third man came in. " Wie lange bleibst Du?"

 

" Keine Ahnung."

Then he went to the toilet and stayed there for about 10 minutes and finally shat after making a lot of grunting noises. Then he left the room.

Then the other guy came back.

Then the shitter came back and repeated his performance😡🙁😩😩

F... loud.

Then he left.

I got on well with the second bloke, a well-travelled man with an amiable personality. But he had to go out every two hours until late in the evening for checks on his eye pressure.

 

7 am: a woman came in , switched on the light and said " please take your tables into the corridor for breakfast and we will bring breakfast and the beds."

 

So we had a horrible breakfast but at 7.30 I was called to the Chefarzt for his assessment. " Looks good. Come back tomorrow for a Kontrolle. Please go back to your room now until the Entlassungsbericht is ready."

 

Moi: " I don't have a room."

 

He was surprised. Long story short but THREE hours later I was still in the corridor and complained I wanna go home.

 

A woman in an office signed it. " the office has to write and sign 32 of this morning. But I can sign."

 

Taxi home! See you tomorrow, hospital!

Yes, I have private insurance and that's why the Chefarzt was shocked I was in a bed in the corridor when he walked past😂

I will be most curious to check the bill when it comes if they sling in the non- existing private room.

The bloke I got friendly with in the temporary double room ( without towels, though we then asked but they forgot and neither of us could be bothered with a shower ) told me his ex- girlfriend used to work for Asklepios and that their business plan was simply to make as much profit from the private rooms as possible, to keep the very good docs ( which they are and indispensable ) and to save on the normal staff ( who are all very friendly and foreign and as cheap as possible ). The hospital right now is 110 per cent occupied.

No idea but a couple of patients I was talking to  say December gets difficult for operations as Xmas approaches. My local eye dec, who " sent " me to hospital with a Notfall  Verweisung the other day said he is only taking 4 more people for ops at his place this side of January.

Sure! Systems überfordert everywhere. Not only post-Corona but just millions of people get sick everyday. And this time of the year. And it has to he paid for. So who has the best system? Probably no country. 

But a personal note: I am happy to be in Germany and not Greece re my eye ( meanwhile 2 eyes ) problem. Closer and faster to a professional service.

And it doesn't depend on whether hospital A has left the " machine " to hospital B.

They all have the stuff here.

No, just practical! I work annoyingly long hours sometimes! Not in the doghouse!😂

Funnily enough, I wanted a rocking horse as a child and never got got one so I bought one today as office deco!!

Oh no😟

My eye doc agrees with the hospital that I do require surgery on the " good " eye ( hospital from Feb 28yh). There is a bloody hole in the centre of my retina so I will have membrane peeling, PPV and endopantena ( spelling?) with blue C2S2 gas ( which will be in the eye for 3-4 weeks! )That means I will be pretty half blind for a while.😟

Ah well, worse things happen at sea...
