botLike Denny Crane, in 'Boston Legal'? Does she go around proclaiming after every major faux pas: 'But I'm jeremytwo's wife!' Like that makes up for whatever she's done wrong? Denny's ego was somehow loveable, so I imagine your madcow of a wife is too.

She doesn't have to be mad to be with me, but it helps... :)

You didn't call in sick instead you loaded yourself up with very strong medication and hoped that you could focus enough for the next 8 hours that you could at least pretend you were working.

if you really have the flu, I can assure you, going to work is not a choice - that was precisely my point.

pseudoephedrine

I could never take that stuff comfortably, though it does indeed work well for clearing out the snot.  Unfortunately I  need to *sleep* when I'm sick and sudafed always left me feeling like I was on meth (but not in a good way)

When taken with a cold can of diet Coke it made my scalp crawl.

You can get Pseudoephidrine in Germany, it comes in powder form (granulat) with aspirin. It's called Aspirin Complex. I was really happy to find it, because for years I used to hoard dayquil to bring back to Germany every time I went to the US.

For terrible pain, in the UK, you can buy Nurofen Plus which is a mix of paracetamol with codeine. I wish they sold it here in Germany, because I sometimes get a really bad ear ache 3-4 times a year due to an chronic illness I developed 20 years ago.

I've used this! It's important to take it with some food or that aspirin part will make your stomach sore. A pharmacist asked if I had asthma the last time I bought a box of it, no, I don't, but apparently it's not good for people prone to asthma. Good to know!

I only visit the UK once per year, but I know that other TTers go more regularly - maybe somebody would be willing to pick up a pack or two for you?

Failing that, I can get a you couple of packs in November, if that is any help...

That is very kind of you to offer! So far I am stocked enough for the year and some of next year (I only use like 1 package per year). I picked up like 4 packs the last time I was in the UK two years ago. I really hesitate to bother anyone for help (too shy to ask). But, if I find myself running out faster than expected, then I will PM you. Thanks a lot, that is reassuring to know if I am desperately out of stock I can ask. I'm hoping to take another UK trip for business this year... let's see if I can manage.

I have tried aspirin, ibuprofen and paracematol but none of them can dent the pain from this ear pain I occasionally get (I have Meniere's disease). It leaves me on the bed all day. I have had a little more success with Thomapyrin which is a combination of those three, but it is no where near as effective.

What does your Hausarzt recommend?  They can prescribe many of these meds, they are just not  available over the counter.

That's what I was thinking and anything with codeine will be a prescription covered by insurance.

I have a friend who has Meniere's. I'm sorry you are living with this.

This is a good question. I have been with my Hausarzt for four years now, so maybe I can ask him. I am just hesitant since I remember the ENT here in town (who I don't visit anymore) flat out telling me no when I asked him. And he's an ENT, he should know about Meniere's (but it's pretty rare, and I'm sure he's never had a patient with it). Actually come to think of it, most ENTs I've found are completely ignorant about Meniere's. From what I've heard, doctors in Germany seem to be really hesitant to prescribe anything for pain. Even my wife had the same experience with a neurologist when asking for pain medication for her migraines. In Vienna, we had a really great Hausarzt - it was much more trusting relationship. I know it sounds silly, but I'm just afraid that my Hausarzt will think I am a druggie or something (I already get from him a prescription for my ear meds, and my thyroid meds, and a benzo for when I get dizzy, but that's about it). I guess it is worth a try, worse case he just says no.

Thank the gods, that lately it has calmed down. Two years ago, I had a vertigo attack at work and was taken to the hospital by ambulance for a two day stay. In Vienna, I also had a major vertigo attack at work, and I stayed in the hospital for 4 days (after that one, I got 24 hour tinnitus and never returned to what I would call 'normal'). It is very scary when it happens. The biggest worry is to have a vertigo attack, alone, out in public. People would probably think I was a drunk or something. Even getting the paramedics to understand it is hard.

I'm hoping that my ear has 'burned itself out'. But it's likely only a remission. Stress is my biggest trigger (besides salt and alcohol).

Sick again or still sick. :( Three weeks of lingering flu I guess. This week, about four days ago, the never ending post nasal drip began. Keeps me up coughing in the night again, just like the flu did. Tired. Crabby. That codeine medicine doesn't help me sleep. High stress on the job this week didn't help. Sweating so much at work the sweat on my hair on my neck is dripping down my back. The bad non-circulating air with the new McD set-up they gave us is not helping calm my own cough. . Building looks great but the air quality is in the toilet. Terrible. Coughing customers standing around 20 minutes for food to go and hacking in my workspace. Kids sneezing and hacking without covering their faces. Ugh. Constant scatchy throat. Nothing helps: bon bon, salt water gargle, allergy nasal spray. Totally miserable.

I still remember the look I got from the pharmacist here the first time I asked for something containing pseudoephedrine+paracetamol (Day Nurse). Nowadays there's Pseudoephedrine + Ibuprofen (boxagrippal) available over the counter

Dayquil is from Vicks - In Germany that's Wick (one of the Wick products will probably be equivalent)

For codeine you you need a doctor's note (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

Are you still taking codeine after over 3 weeks?? Don't do that unless you've been to your doctor again and he told you to...

I don't use codeine because...wait for it....it makes me tired, crabby, irritable and lose sleep. I say that I am allergic to it to every doctor/hospital so they just don't question or prescribe it.

Will your doc not write you out of work so you can recover??

I've been informed by the house-lass / she-devil, that this is how it is when I am ill.  I beg to differ... quite!

@PandaMunich - yes I used that word again! :P)

Yes. I was written off as sick from the onset of felling bad Feb 16th til March 2.  I've been back on the job and worked 5 days, with days off between. Part-time wrker. I think the three days in a row and then a swing shift knocked me down.   I still feel bad tomorrow,I'll go back to the dr. again. Day after tomorrow I work a shorter swing shift again.

No. I took this 'Paracodin N-Tropfen' two nights the first week I was written off work as sick. Then I didn't bother usuing it again until two nights ago because I didn't seem to need it until then. In despeartion, remembering the dr. said, 'to help you get some sleep' I took it.  It takes a long time to kick in if its purpose is to quell a cough. Packaging says you can take it up to three times a day. Haven't.

I took ibuprophen (as dr. suggested), six 400 mg over the past almost four weeks. I took one today because along with the fever and chills that came back early in the afternoon, I had the same old hip aches (like I'd done an hour on a stepper machine), upper legs aches (ditto) I had on Feb. 16 onward to a few days before I was back on the job. It has felt like  a repeat of what I had back then only now I have this wheezy dry cough and crackling fluid in my ear.

I had a lung infection two winters ago. The dr. gave me two week off work, antibiotics right away and the second week a steroid inhaler (which gave me some bad side effects!). Right now my lungs crackle and wheeze only when I lie down on my back at night, so I'm becoming a side rester for now. My lungs are not bubbling /gurgling full like they were with that lung infection. Still, as said here, I will go to the dr. tomorrow if I am still feeling poorly.

That was back when people took care of each other.

I'd like to know how we can turn back time so people took care of each other again.

... though I gotta say there are quite a few on TT who do :^)

When you think about doing something nice for somebody, just do it. Immediately. Sometimes I spend too much time thinking and not doing.
