What documents to ask for when renting a room in a WG?

5 posts in this topic

I looked at the 'General tips when renting accommodation' sticky but this was not mentioned there (unless I'm blind). My question is when renting a room in a WG from the people living there, should I ask for any documents about their rental agreement with the owner of the building/apartment? Just to make sure for example that they are allowed to sublease a room, or to make sure they are not moving out or anything like that? I'm asking in terms of both what is legal and what should be done to protect oneself.

I would ask for a copy of their rental agreement as well as written confirmation from the landlord that you are allowed to sublet.

and a "Wohnungsgeberbestätigung" so you can register at that address.

Don't I need that after I move in?

Yes. Ask whether they'll be happy to give one to you when you move in. They have to do it, but there are a number of threads hear of people experiencing trouble getting that piece of paper.
