Shopping for CDs in Frankfurt

16 posts in this topic

Somewhere that doesn't sell them for €17.99 and the only choice is Best of Queen and Tom Jones?

I can't believe it's so difficult to find CDs in FFM.

Any big electronics store, like Mediamarkt, etc., has shedloads of CDs. Many at low prices. You can also order via amazon.co.uk (or other internet provider in UK) if you cannot find it in FFM.

I couldn't believe it either when I moved here! There are a few specialist dance music vinyl shops but for other genres and CDs - yes, the choice I have found is MediaMarkt, Saturn etc, but the choice is not the best especially if your tastes are a little broader. There is nothing like Fopp here, to my knowledge. I now do my mainstream CD shopping at cdwow.com or amazon.de or else I get people to buy stuff in the UK or the States and send it over which actually sometimes does work out cheaper. I would love to find a great record shop that has a wide selection here in Frankfurt too, so I would love to hear any recommendations!

There was a small shop on one of the streets off to the left of Zeil as you are walking up from hauptwoche. Close to Konstablerwoche. Can't remember the name of the store but I picked up a few gems that I had been looking for in a long time.

There is a huge CD WOW on the Zeil, think it's over Karstadt but they are not cheap. I find Muller to be the best value, always pick up some good bargains on CD's. Don't know if they have a store directly in Frankfurt city center though. I used to shop in the one in Bad Homburg.

I would 2nd the CD-WOW.com option - free delivery to Europe & worldwide & dirt cheap. They are frequently neck & neck with Amazon.

TESCO have just recently started a mail ordering shop based in Jersey.

They are supposed to be cheaper that play.com !!!

Frankfurt is pretty poorly served for the music lover. There's a shop on Berger Str. that no one has mentioned - but it's probably not really worth mentioning! I get most of my stuff from CD Wow/ Play / Amazon (as I did back home - much cheaper). Karstadt and Saturn are ok in an HMV kind of way.

So - what's everyone listening to then?

The last couple of things I bought were:

The Broken Family Band - Welcome Home Loser (sort of alt-country from Cambridge)

John Legend - Get Lifted (bit disappointing - nothing immediately half as good as Ordinary People on there)

The Magic Numbers (awesome. A pure injection of joy into the day. Love Me Like You = single of the year so far)

Suzanne Vega - Songs in Grey and Red (Hadn't listened to her in years but she was absolutely brilliant at TITP)

Hopefully these will wean me off my current Rolling Stones obsession - I must have listened to Exile on Main Street about a dozen times in the last week. B)

Rufus Wainwright partly because it seems that was all I brought over from my collection, partly because he is brilliant, partly because I'm a big fan of his Dad.

Any other current listening recommendations?

Rufus Wainwright is fantastic. I was meant to see him in New York last summer playing Summerstage with Ben Folds. Missed his set due to a slightly delayed flight. Walking through Central Park to get to the arena we could hear him singing Hallelujah - which was a fairly special moment. Shame we missed the rest of the gig. Ben Folds was fantastic though and Rufus joined him on stage for a cover of Careless Whisper that had to be heard to be believed.

Finally caught Rufus in Frankfurt earlier this year and I'm currently in two minds over whether to head over to Cologne for his gig in November or try to catch him in Glasgow just before Christmas.

You might want to check out Anthony & The Johnsons. Anthony duets with Rufus on Old Whores Diet on Want 2. His second album " I Am Bird Now" is deep soul via Cabaret.

Thanks I'll cjeck him out. That was the one track from Want2 I didn't like at first but it was now began to get to me.

Where can you see good music in Frankfurt? Not necessarily big groups, rather decent music, played well at a club where you can really appreciate the band?

I have been to Jahrhunderthalle to see Kraftwerk and Batschkapp to see Laibach - neither venue was very inspiring and only one of the bands was. We quite often go to the Jazzkeller but the crowd can be quite variable and it is the kind of place that I prefer in the winter for some reason. I used to go to Nachtleben if I liked the genre of music and there was somewhere else jesus I forget the name but anyway I saw Franz Ferdinand there last year and I think they have other concerts. Not really much help is it?

The Rufus gig was in the Cafe Royal which had a sort of (appropriately) faded glamour. Batschkapp always seems to have loads of gigs on but I haven't been there yet.

Old thread this - but I thought worth resurrecting.

Just moved to FFM myself, and I've done some research on the CD buying opportunities in the FFM area (not comprehensive, but a bit more detail than we've had here to date).

MediaMarkt

Various locations - fine for new releases, rock, pop, German and the like. Forget it for Classical and Jazz.

Saturn

Ditto

Muller (Bad Homburg)

Ditto

WOM (in Hertie on the Zeil)

NOT YET VISITED - but I'm informed it has a good Avant Garde selection . . .

Zweitausendeins (2001)

Kornmarkt 14

This is more like it - proper music store, with DVDs and books as well

Musikladen

Stiftstr. 2 - NOT YET VISITED but has a good reputation for "rawk"

CDs am Goethe-Haus

Am Salzhaus, 1

Classical, Jazz and World Music mecca for Frankfurt ex-pats.
