Medical approbation via USMLE / ECFMG certificate

9 posts in this topic

Hi, does anyone know if Germany accept USMLE certificate for Approbation to practice in Germany, which means you don't have to take the Kenntnisprüfung?

My German is C1 level, and I already have a job offer, but applying for the approbation is a little bit complicated since I am from a non-EU country, and the German bureaucracy is driving me crazy. Thus I would like to know if you have some experience or advice!

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your reply!

I am from Taiwan, also finished my medical education in Taiwan. I am about to apply in Niedersachsen, while  Brandenburg is another option.

Hi, did you complete all USMLE Steps? Did you start /finish your residency in the US? If not, do you have an  ECFMG certificate?  From my experience (in Bayern), the decision on whether you have to do the Kenntnisprüfung or not will depend on the scope of your undergraduate (medical school) studies- you will have to furnish them with your transit, amongst other documents.

Hi, thanks for sharing your experience!

I finished my studies and PJ and done several months of Residency in Taiwan.

Actually I don't have the ECFMG certificate yet. Considering that I am from a non-EU country, it is very likely that I will have to wait for months to be informed that I will have to take the Kenntnisprüfung, and then wait for some other months

That's why I think apply with USMLE might be reasonable and much efficient :p

In  that case, I'd rather get a Berufserlaubnis using your Taiwanese certificates, start working as a doctor and get used to the medical system here. If it is decided, at the end of the day,  that you do have to do the Prüfung, then so be it... You'd be used to the System by then and would easily be able to scale through.

BTW the Kenntnisprüfung is actually sort of a Short case /Viva voce type exam. You clerk and present a patient in German (either a medical or surgical case),  verbally discuss the management of the case with your examiners (doctors)  and of course write an Arztbrief. The nearest USMLE equivalent would be the Step 2 CS

Thanks, it also looks practical.

I am concerned if I can get the niederlassungserlaubnis after working with Berufserlaubnis for 2 years?

Well, it solely depends on the Gutachter who would handle your case and his/her set of criteria as well as  the state in which you are practicing. You would have to wait to find out. I am currently waiting for the verdict on my own Approbation application- in Bayern.

Hi, did they gave you Approbation in Bayern, considering that you have a ECFMG certificate? I have a ECFMG and wondering if it may help with Approbation without Kenntnissprüfung in Bayern.
