smartphone + tarife

7 posts in this topic

I want to buy a smartphone and i noticed operators have offers like giving a smartphone + a monthly contract for a SIM card with a specific data/phone tariff. What i do not understand is how long should i pay for the contract? is it a life-time no end contract or i cancel it after a specific period?

Also in case i decide to cancel it in the future, then what happens to the smartphone ? should i return it ? or is there any minimum number of payment months that i have to fulfill for the phone price itself before being able to cancel the contract?

I checked the tariff details here and there but couldn't find anything about this!

If you sign up to a contract for a mobile phone it would normally be for 24 months and automatically renews for a further 2 years 12 months unless you cancel within 3 months of contract end. If you want to cancel early you would have to pay the outstanding balance until contract end, you will always keep the phone.

My advice would be if you can afford to purchase a phone outright then do so and then look at getting a monthly contract with someone like winsim.de

 Usually, for 12 month.

I second that.

For a minimum of 24 months with an automatic continuation of 12 months should you not have cancelled it in due time in accordance with the conract conditions (which usually means the provider must have received it in writing at least 3 full months before the initial contract period expires). When cancelling it is advisable to do so by snail mail using registered post with proof of delivery receipt.

In any case these devices are locked and branded by the manufacturer when supplied at discount to the providers. You could continue to use it in the original provider's network by means of a pay-as-you-go sim-card although to be able to use them in any other network you may have to pay a fee.

Every year a number of specialist German magazines publish comparative charts showing the benefits or disadvantages of these provider-supplied 'discounted' devices versus the option of buying the same device outright and using it with a choice of provider sim cards and tarifs. I have never seen one which didn't show this scheme was likely to be a far more expensive solution for most users. Because no two individuals will have exactly the same patterns of use of their smartphones there are exceptions, but not many.

IME would have to agree with @Sir Percy B's advice. I'd also suggest, because whenever new models are announced buying a recent model becomes a considerably more attractive prospect, that you shop around using idealo.com or geizhals.at for late model bargains.

i think i'd better to buy a phone separately , but is there any website which can search for the best mobile phone deals on the net?

I mean besides ebay or amazon!

Yes but it can be a bit of a minefield with tarifs, the link I gave you winsim.de is most probably the best in my opinion. They also allow you to upgrade to cheaper tariffs whereas some providers only allow this for new customers. For example I had a 3gb tarif for my son which was originally €24.99, I noticed they had a special offer for €15.99 and with an additional 1gb, I upgraded and now pay the lesser price.

To answer your question on mobile phones, just type into google the phone you want for example and choose someone like idealo.de for a list  of the best prices.

Some of these links are to older pages but most of the sites will have current comparisons available.

COMPUTERBILD, for example, is bound to have several pages of stats albeit IMO their actual monthly magazine edition gives more detail and is far easier to follow.
