New International School in Pinneberg

20 posts in this topic

I don't know if anyone is interested, but in Pinneberg (so quite close to Hamburg , especially if you live on the west side) in a newly build area, an international school will open that covers pretty much all ages (preschool to 12th grade) : https://www.isceducation.de/

I am not affiliated in anyway, just noticed it after taking a shortcut due to road work, and thought it might interest some.

Its been there for some little time already - built on the site of the former Eggerstedt Kasserne.

Mentioned several times in the local press - along with the usual moanings from some quarters about people should not be able to "buy" education...

There is building modus in the area. Apart from the Kasserne it looks like they are building next to Aldi/Famila in Westring as well.

This school is going to be nice!  It's a work in progress, but their physical space is inviting, and more importantly, their staff is passionate.  They are obviously going to need a bit of time to work out the kinks, but what they are still lacking in infrastructure and organisation, they make up for in vision and dedication.  It will be interesting to see if schools such as the International School of Hamburg respond.

The physical campus is already nice, and the energy is great.  A new school has inevitable kinks that need to be worked out, and the vision is so much bigger than what is in place so far.  I would agree that it is already a compelling place.

This is only its second year of operation.

Hello, can anyone here share his/her opinion about this school?

We live in Waldenau, walking distance from it!

Our child will finish Grundschule and we are looking for the next stage.

Thanks,

Alberto

My son went to this school for a year. It was totally disappointing with the facilities and the management of the school.

They are interested only in money from the parents and in return there is nothing on the offering. The school even lacks a decent play ground and he learnt nothing useful in this 1 year. we pulled him out of the school and he goes to another private school. Stay away from ISC. If you need any specific details, feel free to write to me. I live in Pinneberg and we could meet for a coffee if you need.

Thanks

Decow.

Schaafweide, since October.

Working at XFEL Waldenau is the bestest place to live, especially if you have a family, superhappy to be in this area.

Never mind I have my own reason why I don't like Northern Germany but that's a different story... (still, living in Germany as such I like it very much)

i live close to Pinnerberg Mitte. I can be reached via west ring ( the new bridge) in few mins. so ideally very close to Prisdorf.

Hello, Decow (or anyone that can help).

My husband, 14 year old daughter, and I are looking to move this fall to the Hamburg area (from the USA) and I was looking at ISC (International School Campus) for my daughter who doesn't speak German. She will be entering 9th grade. I am looking for a school that can accommodate her. Can you tell me what school you decided to move your child to, Decow? Any suggestions for me? I just heard of a private school in Elmshorn, Liebniz Privatschule. Any good? Any suggestions on where to live? We wanted to stay close to Hamburg because relatives live in Poppenbutel. We are open to any living areas and schools around the Hamburg area, so I am not against other private schools in Aurensburg or anywhere, etc. I like living in the countryside, so for me, this isn't a big deal, but I don't know how that would affect my daughter, socially. Any city/town suggestions? We will be managing our companies in the USA remotely and traveling to and fro, so we don't have to live in a specific town/city. We aren't rich, by any means, so we are probably considered middle class. I am most concerned about my daughter's education. I know that she will struggle with the language, so I am wondering if anybody has any 9th grade / German high school experiences or suggestions that they wish to share in and around the Hamburg area? Thank you!

Hello,

In your case, since your daughter is in 9th Grade, it makes sense to put her in international school.

ISC in Pinneberg did not fit our needs , but that does not mean it wont fit others.

I suggest give the school a call and discuss your situation with them.

The school in Elmshorn ( Leibiz) does not offer english medium education, It is german curriculum focussed with english as an additional language.

Good luck with your move.

BUMP!

Hello,

We are also looking at the International School in Pinneberg. The school has been renamed the Wabe International School. They had an open house yesterday and we had a look around. I asked about the name change and was told that they were always run by, or affiliated with Wabe, but now the affiliation is clear.

It looks like a really nice school. Of course, everything was polished and shiny for open house because they are trying to make a good impression. They've outgrown their current campus and will soon be breaking ground on an expansion campus located next door.

If anybody has had any more recent experience or impressions with the school, I'd be grateful to know what you think about it.

Cheers.

The "we will soon be breaking ground" is a bit suspect.  That school has been in the red since it opened, and while that is understandable in the first years, it is problematic in year 7.  They also said they would open the boarding house in 2018, 2019, 2021, and beyond.  Not sure if and when that will ever happen.  But the physical campus is nice, even if hallways are small and the lack of a proper grass pitch is less than ideal.

They have always been affiliated with Wabe, it's true.  The name change makes sense, and let's face it, ISC was a less-than-great name.

The bigger question is how old your kids are and what your wishes are in a school.  Their IB offerings are quite limited and with a staff that has relatively little experience with the IB; for essentially the same price you could send a kid to ISH and have a more experienced IBDP staff with a MUCH bigger range of course offerings and even alternate programming in the IBCP.  So for IB I would not choose Wabe.  For the younger grades, it depends on what you want.  For the middle school and, to a lesser extent, the primary school, some staff are not certified teachers, but TAs being asked to teach EAL or GAL classes, with the teachers of record being the regular English/German teachers.  There are several Quereinsteiger teaching higher level classes.  But there are also some really great staff, and the quality of the teaching overall is mostly good.

In terms of academic rigour in grades 1-10 the school is a bit lacking--in some cases.  In terms of creativity and alternative options, it can be a good choice.  The school encourages things like hands-on cooking or building, so that is cool.  Small school means all the staff know all of the kids.  High staff turnover hurts that to some degree, but overall it is a familial atmosphere.

In short it depends heavily on the ages of your kids and what you expect out of a school.  If rigour of any kind is on your radar, I would think twice.  If your kids need/prefer a familial atmosphere and some alternative learning options, it might be a good fit.
