if you had the time and enthusiasm to knot your own rag rug or (even more love required) wool tuft rug

Alternatively, dessa could buy a white/natural one and dye it.

That's one ugly rug, sorry ;)

I would simply get something from IKEA in ivory, or beige, or brown or green, i.e. something that goes with the wall colour and the colour of your sofas: http://m.ikea.com/de/de/catalog/functional/10374/10653/?chapterId=10692

For example, this ivory one: http://m.ikea.com/de/de/catalog/products/art/00185640/

The advantage with IKEA being that if you no longer like the rug, they will give you your money back within the first 365 days: http://www.ikea.com/ms/de_DE/campaigns/services/rueckgaberecht.html

In our household, mismatched matches.  Antique blends with retro, modern and IKEA.  Quite easy on the eye though...nothing too wild.

I recently learned of the German industrial designer, Luigi Colani.  Quite a living legend with amazing futuristic vision. One of his principles of design is to embrace the design of nature. No straight lines in nature. Nice rug that could be accompanied by some curvy accessories. Here's a LC lamp that I like though my husband would hate it..

I was recently given a lamp like this one...very 70's.  Husband hated it at first though now loves it.  Oddly, it coordinates quite well with a fab ornate chandelier I found on fleabay.

Go for the rug if you love it so much.

I like it.  The colors look like they would complement the rest of your room.  I hope you have a vacuum cleaner powerful enough to pull dirt out of the deep pile.

Disclaimer: I tend to like garish colors and unusual shapes and textures.  We have lots of Troika, Clarice Cliff, and Whitefriars throughout our house.

@emkay, I love that orange lamp!

We have some very random glass and pottery combinations. Sadly lost my CC treasures to my ex.. Isn't Troika 60's, about the same time as lava glaze pottery?  I acquired a huge 60's lava glaze lamp which is quietly waiting in the cellar for my husband to learn to love it in the perfect location in the house.  My erosion technique needs a bit more time before he thinks it's his idea

Just google Luigi Colani.  He's designed everything from planes, Ferrari, trains, cars, trucks  etc to furniture, household items, computers etc. YouTube interviews are interesting  A true maverick.

Yes, and I don't understand why they do it. Aforementioned ex needed a sofa for about 6 months so this is what he did. I could not believe it when he told me he just gave it back to them. It's a joke.

Or a clue to how much they sell.

Indeed, a colleague needed a baby bed, checked the stock at our store, 8 were delivered, went the next day, none left (I don't live in a metropolis; it only just fulfills the German definition of a city).

see, I hate all of those.  And I fully appreciate the tackiness of most rugs with any sort of pattern on them whatsoever.  The reason I needed to check whether I had lost my mind was because it is so unlike anything I would ever dream of putting anywhere in my home.  This particular one just speaks to me, I guess.

Ordered the stripey disaster a couple minutes ago.  Will post pics once she's set up.  Thanks for all the input!

I have no color in my living room. You have inspired me. I want to get some colorful pillows for my beige leather sofa even thought it is a PITA to get pillows to stand up on leather.

fraufruit, do you sew or have your cushion covers made? You could use something like the fabric I have in my profile picture, just in different colours, as I have made a mistake and had the opposite problem. I needed lining for a copy of a Dior New Look coat I was making and ordered this online as I loved the pattern. However, the black is really a stiff velvety second layer attached to the white slippery(ish) fabric and it does not move as lining should, which, I suppose, is what you'd be after. (I made the stupid decision to go with it anyway and still did not get around to replacing it, four years later; the skirt does not move right.)

It really depends on what you want to use the carpet for.

If you want to get frisky with Mr dangerous and it doesn`t leave marks on your back, then why not ?

It may end up like the 80s, like everything wore thinking it was cool. I'm hiding photos from that era :)

From my perspective, as things are standing now it may be the sofa that breaks the deal. Leather may clash with the cutesiness of this rug if the two are kind of left alone maybe.

At the moment the colour combo sounds good to me and the house sounds calming. This will change with this rug. Kitsch may be the way to go, but I think this may need to be supported by posters, frames, objects, cushions etc with colours from the rug to tie everything together otherwise it may attract all attention to itself and a focus point on the floor may not be a good idea always - unless you are seriously in love with a carpet. These may make the difference between mismatch as kitsch.

The colour scheme seemes to be based on contrast between cream and darker walls. This is a strong contrast, so other elements may need to be secondary to this or at least remain within the existing design. Would this create another focus and clash with that? I don't know. I would take the risk with darker floors, but lighter floors, I'm not so sure. Would everything other than the walls look too light and unanchored together?

(Personally I would buy it, then dye and ruin it and feel happy with my work :) )

Over the years, I have tried many different Kissenhullen fabrics and they all slide down. I just fluff them and force them to stand up just before company comes. And, no, I abhor sewing.

Thanks for your tip, though.

DD has already ordered the rug so advising her not to do so is too late.

Personally, I want to see the photos when it is installed (and I want to see her living room).
