Tell me what to do

37 posts in this topic

Halp pls.  I have been rendered paralyzed with indecision regarding a trivial matter and require the assistance of the strangers who live in my computer to tip the needle in any direction whatsoever.

Inviting others to post in this thread in the event they should have a this-or-that dilemma suited to be decided by disinterested and/or semi-anonymous parties.

Anyway, enough about  you, back to my thing.  Should I buy this carpet?  Originally I wanted black, then I softened up and started leaning toward brown, now I'm hunkering toward this technicolor (potential) disaster.  My walls are a kind of deep pine green, the floor is some ugly pale fake pine-"optik" parkett, the sofas are cream-colored leather and the rest of the furniture is woods and earth tones.  The carpet would be for sitting directly on while pulled up cross-legged to a low, long stone table.  Tell me: is this carpet really flipping snazzy or have I finally lost my shit?  Come one, come numerously, to tell me what I should do; there's nobody whose advice I'd rather let fly in one ear and out the other, than yours.

here she is.  She'll be 200 x 290cm long.  90 euros and free delivery.

I really like it and think it would give a pop to your drab floors and neutral sofas. Don't forget some popping pillows to go with it on your sofa.

Get out of the box!

Dessa, you really "lost your shit" a long time ago, so there is nothing left to lose now, is there? :D

My opinion, just in case you want it, is that if it has quite deep pile, and will be really comfortable to sit on, then buy it. Do you have scatter cushions on your sofa? If so, it might be fun to have then in colours to match the rug - either striped or several single colours from the rug.

At the end of the day, if you happen to find out that you don't love this rug as much as you hope, you can still replace it!

all right  why then?

It's too much for me, like you can't decide what colours you want :), but I am not saying choosing plain black is right. I get it though, it's not you, it's me :D, in my mind I can hear my soon-to-be ex-husband saying 'Why don't you like it? It's so happy!', but also 'Who told you that colours have to match?!' as an answer to me saying something would not go with whatever else we had.

May I ask where you are ordering that rug from, DD? I could use a couple of new throw rugs in my hallway. Sick of the plain gray wool ones I have that come out of the washing machine all bendy. Might like to try a pop of color there.

ach, if there are two things I can't stand, it's deliberately staged instances of matchy-matchy or anything that even remotely reminds of of happiness.

There were a number of other colors I liked, including another, brighter, lighter green and a deep merlot red, but so far, nothing has appealed to me as much as *these colors* in *this order* at *those intervals*. All the other stripey carpets I found hideous, but there's something I'm hoping resembles 70s-ish kitsch about this one.

I can't seem to shake the feeling that missing out on this carpet could be the biggest mistake of my life.  Careers, friends and SOs come and go but missing out on a carpet so garish and uncasually kitsch-ugly it actually achieves a kind of jaw-dropping beauty, is something you have to live with forever.

Dessa - that, surely has to be the one and only answer!!!

You like it, you are hooked on it and you want it - I don't even know why you came here to ask what others thought. Buy the damned thing and post pictures of it in situ!!!

Go for it then!

No, I don't like matchy-matchy American mom blog let's pretend our life is perfect style. I do have a habit of painting things white though. (I recommend OBI 2in1 Buntlack :D.)

I'll try to ask some questions to help tip the decision:

- Do you get bored with colors/designs/knickknacks/pictures quickly?

(I do, so I would not buy this. If you tend to keep things around, then take it.)

- Do you tend to headaches or migraines?

(I do, so looking at the carpet makes me dizzy. Your reaction seems quite different.)

- Do you care about the opinions of other people (not meaning this thread ;) )?

(I don't, and you don't, so you might want to follow your gut feeling.)

- Would it be fun to get, say, bright yellow and lime green pillows to throw on the sofa with that carpet?

(My gay friends would be shouting "Yes! YES!", and I might, too. Do you like mix&match?)

- Is the room for this carpet well lit or dark?

(Dark: plain black will be too somber, get this brighter carpet. Well lit: it could go either way, this carpet could be fun or garish.)

- Does the carpet make you laugh? Several times? Even after an hour?

(then get it.)

In a nutshell, you might want it. Have good time!

well that's your answer isn't it?

I personally think it's absolutely hideous, but if you dig it and worry you might regret missing this opportunity for the rest of your life...nab that sucker while you can!

ETA:  I haven't shopped for rugs since I moved over, but in the US at least, Ebay has  an obscene selection and I did very well there.  Many 100% wool options, many handmade, for completely stupid prices (stupid great that is).   Maybe have a gander.

Yes.

Good thread. I can see it getting a lot of use.

Back to you and her, the only thing better would be if you had the time and enthusiasm to knot your own rag rug or (even more love required) wool tuft rug. Assuming that you have other things to do with your time, then buy this one. She is a beaut, you don't want to miss out, and if it turns out to be a shallow fly-by-night fling, shove her on here as a has-been...

Its great for casual ambience. It has little bit for all. Comfort for some, techno colour for someone else, mismatch for one, talking point for other. The cushions would shift the focus from the carpet to the exciting range of cushions.

Go and get it.

In *my world* it would be hideous, too, but then nerdy 'ole me needs things (preferably Asian) to quiet me down, not further stimulate my highly strung nervous system. ;)

But this is not about my taste, or even taste in general. It's about trusting your gut feeling.

And if that entails picking up and loving a nutty bit of 70s design that totally runs counter to all sorts of fundamental statements ( if there are two things I can't stand, it's deliberately staged instances of matchy-matchy or anything that even remotely reminds of of happiness), then so be it.

So go and get it.

I guess. ;)
