Car tax - petrol vs. diesel

23 posts in this topic

Can anyone give me an update on tax for diesel cars - I'm about to purchase a new diesel with DPF (Diesel Particle Filter).

Any info on difference in insurance costs (petrol v diesel cars) would also be much appreciated.

Taxation depends on the emissions class of the engine (for diesel) and if your particle filter was factory fitted. As an example, A class 4 emissions diesel with factory fitted particle filter costs €15.40 per 100cm³ per year. You can calculate your own tax here or here (the second one uses the "Schlüsselnummer" from your car paperwork)

There is negligible difference in insurance between diesel and petrol powered vehicles as the insurable risks are essentially the same. Car value, power, location and driver details play a more significant role.
