Where does the name "Punkte in Flensburg" comes from?

9 posts in this topic

Hi guys,

my good friend google was not able to tell me why Germany was not using a more official name than "Punkte in Flensburg" ?

I mean good old bureaucratic German is more complicated usually right? Should it not be named "Fahrerserlaubnispunkteanzahl" for example ?

Is it due to a beer fetish? Just curious to have your opinions on the matter. It's been in my mind ever since i got a ticket last time.

:)

The Federal Kraftfahrt Amt is in Flensburg.  This is where the records are kept for drivers who get points.  I actually went there once when I lived in Jutland to get a printout saying I had no points so that my Danish insurance company would give me a discount.

Thanks rhody.

Well i also spotted the location of the central Amt. I just thought it was a curious name for it. Especially "Punkte in Flensburg" instead of "Flensburger Punkte"...

Is this me becoming too German you think? Has it finally got to me that i want to have everything proper? :P

The Punktesystem was renamed Fahreignungs-Bewertungssystem in 2010, the previous Verkehrszentralregister in which the Punkte are stored was renamed Fahreignungsregister in 2014.

Flensburger is something from Flensburg, i.e. Flensburger beer you mentioned is a beer produced in Flensburg. The points are not produced in Flensburg, they are "produced" by your local police or speed cameras and then stored in Flensburg. That's why.

Yes, definately! :D I'm not sure anyone living in Germany can become "too German", ;) although now I come to think about it, yes, one can become "more German than the Germans", like any convert. There are Roman Catholic converts, "more catholic than the Pope" and I know an Englishman who is insufferable. He won't talk to fellow English nationals in English, even when the conversation is being held in English! :o

As for Punkte in Flensburg, at least everyone understands what is meant by the expression, unlike the mouthful "Fahreignungs-Bewertungssystem"!

Seven points is all you get... number eight will cost you your license.
