Posted 7 Mar 2016 Although I am registered here as a Brit, I will not need to take German citizenship as I also have an Irish passport. And I'm probably not the only Brit with this option. At a guess, I imagine that most other Brits living here would seriously consider the option of German citizenship. However, that would depend on what the German government's policy would be for Brits living here in the event of a Brexit. Arguably, the German government would either issue those Brits not wanting to become German with the usual/current permanent residence/work permits currently issued to non-EU citizens or some sort of other, special resident/work permit. Posted 15 Mar 2016 I already have dual Australia/British citizenships. Perhaps the option of dual/multiple citizenship with Germany or other EU countries would also be available..? If it were, I would take that option (probably by way of marrying the BF). If not, I'm not sure what I would do. Posted 26 Mar 2016 There are ways of keeping both. For example you get a letter from your employer stating that you will need your aussie passport still due to needing ,in the future, longish stints back in the home country plus a handfull of other exceptions. So if youre pulling beers in a pub then youll deffo have to relinquish your aussie/kiwi one. Now that we have a (very rough) timescale, I'm worried I won't have been here long enough exercising my much beloved treaty rights to get the automatic residence. What's the likely outcome? I'll have been here living, working and paying taxes etc for three years this October. the clock starts ticking next March, and I hope it keeps ticking for the whole two years, then I get my five years in! But what if it doesn't? Will the German government fast track us to German citizenship out of pity? Posted 3 Oct 2016 People under 5 years will really depend on the will of Parliament. I would not be so worried as you moved here before Brexit so I suspect you will be fine. Worst case scenario is if the EU wants to really punish the UK for leaving then it could in theory kick all Brits out. But hopefully they might grant a one-time exemption if we prove willing by jumping through whatever hoops they choose to set up? Has there been any other concrete sign from the Bundesregierung? The Greens' message is very touching.
