Thread for the weather 'oop North...

 

Today all seasons on one: howling gale, blinding sunshine, then dark as late evening, lashing rain with sleet and a few thunderstorms for good measure. Currently never-a-dull moment.

I'm surprised it never seems to flood with all the rain we get here. I've lived in places where it can rain for 5 minutes and everythings flooded. Here the rain can go on for 15-20 days.

The dose makes the poison - it rains non-stop but not very heavily so at the end of the day HH only gets around an average of 800 mm a year spread out over 130 days.

On my way to work this morning in Hamburg, it was only a drizzle outside, and I felt like "Wow! What a lovely day!", even though it was still miserable as hell! Just nice not to feel like the world was howling in my face for once :rolleyes:

Decided to cycle in to work yesterday. Way in was ok, not much rain at all. BUT the cycle home along the river was a nightmare, into strong winds with heavy rain in the face.

 

Needless to say took the HVV again this morning.

A short while ago it was only light drizzel - now its RAIN. The field opposite has standing water - at least the horses that are there in the daytime have covers on. The area alongside the A23 between Pinneberg Nord & Mitte whete the Pinnau crosses is a vast sheet of water.

 

Next storm is on its way. As long as March & April aren't like this...

I used to live in Glasgow so it's gonna be a nice comparison to remember when I move to HH.

Managed to avoid the weekend snow by flying to England on Friday (got out before the security guys went on strike).

By time we returned Sunday early evening there was just a bit of slush on the side of the runway.

 

Now its just raining...

I think it's nice how people here don't let the weather bother them though. Generally they just dress for it really well and get on with it. When it snowed over the weekend, the buses and the trains still ran on time, and there were still people sat outside bars having a drink!

Beautiful sunny weather today. As long as you were in a wind-shadow it was quiet warm (up to about +20 C). Cold wind though.

Two hours ago I received this mail from a friend now living in Seattle:

 

 

We had a record warm winter here in the Pacific Northwest. The snow line is at about 6 - 7,000 ft, from my airborne observations; normally it would be at around 3,000 ft. As usual, our local weather expert, Professor Cliff Mass (http://cliffmass.blogspot.com/), was asked on the radio whether this was an indication of global warming, to which he responded that the people in New England might have a different opinion on this...

Very strong winds overnight & continuing today. Apparently worse on its way. Storms forecast at least up to Thursday.

Yesterday afternoon & evening very strong winds. Anything not tied down in garden got knocked over. Late evening it calmed down a bit.

 

Currently we have a thunderstorm & hail is hammering on the Velux-Fenster.

I could strongly feel the wind on my car when driving the L103 form Hamburg to Pinneberg yesterday afternoon. Some branches on the road too but nothing tragic happened.

 

Today an unidentified , bright shiny object appeared in the sky around 08:00 , everyone was puzzled but after 5' it started blowing and raining and everything went back to normal :lol:
