The Germans and their sense of humour...

I know, it's a sticky subject.

The attached ZDF Film, an episode from the satirist  Jan Böhmermann

made me smile and in some cases laugh out loud.

He's taken the so called "yellow press" and turned it on it's head.

Any kiosk will have a dozen different weeklies called Freizeit Revue or similar.

They headline with so and so1 has an affair with so and so2 (says jilted lover so and so3).

Facts are hard to find in these mags but they sell millions every week.

Böhmermann beat them at their own game by actually publishing a similar looking mag

filled with tattle about the families involved in publishing said twattle.

He announced that they'd printed 500.000 copies.

So far so good. I'll get to my point...

These half a million copies sold out immediately!

Ebay has copies of the €1 going for €50.

I got hold of a copy as there was a waiting list.

Enough on the list - they'd do a reprint - and they had to.

The mag is actually very funny with headlines like:

6 kilos in 3 days

The then listed amount of food for thes 3 days would sink a battleship

as it's a diet on how to gain 6 kilos...

5 "facts" about publisher X of magazine

5 outrageous lies (he has 3 legs, / he started 9/11  - immediately debunked in small print.

If your German is up to it, the show will supply a smile.

If you find a copy of the mag, it'll certainly brighten your day.

They really are cute. They've been visiting me, too, pinching the bird seed. It's red even though it looks black on the photo. The photo is bad qualitiy, I took it from the other side of the window pane.

Just managed to shoot a better photo (also from the other side of the window pane). My friend has been here twice within 1/2 hour. The upside-down flower pot is to stop any rats from climbing up the pole. Have seen one climbing up there and feeding on the seeds with my very own eyes. The flower pot idea was a Bltzidee (sudden inspiration) and it works. Have seen a rat climbing up the pole and the flower pot stopped it from climbing further.

I cut this election poster from a lamppost after the 2017 election.

Now it has a prominent place on the kitchen wall.

I recall watching (on TV) his 6-part "Royal Institution Christmas Lecture" in 1972.  "The Language of Animals".

Was just about to read this article.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/04/science/stromboli-volcano-photos.html?action=click&module=Science%20%20Technology&pgtype=Homepage
Hit the paywall.
Read too much.

Memories came up.

Spent the night on the volcano with Thomas
half a bottle of red wine
two beach mats
and 900 meters above the Mediterranean Sea
during a thunderstorm.

Gusts and rain,
thunder and lightning,
sulfur stink and lava.

much too close sometimes
the stones fell from the sky

Loud noises.
Strong smells.
Wet skin.
Dazzled.
Orange darkness.

Forceful.

Humbleness.

That was crazy.

And completely barmy.

:)

I have seen these wonderful creatures many times snorkeling in Crystal River, FL (their winter home) and even down the Florida Keys. Even hold a PADI diving specialty about manatee protection and conservation.
They love to come up near boats being hosed off  in quieter harbors and beg for a drink of fresh water!

Manatees look lazy, but are powerful fast swimmers with that big tail paddle if need be... but mostly they hang out, happily chomping the underwater greenery.

One of the few good things Sea World in Orlando does is raise and release orphaned manatee calves... seen on a back stage tour, they were unbelievably cute 40 pound babies swimming around eating salad, hanging out with some injured and healing adults. :D
