Being sized up for income/assets when dating

Just a US habit?

Not that I am aware of, as an American living in Forbes #3 overpriced city in the US. I will say that almost all new housing that's being built here is high end, and a lot of us little people are trying to figure who the heck can afford these places. It's pretty mind boggling what people are willing to pay just for parking spaces outside in some areas.

TBH, the only people who really seem intent on others' income are the fundraisers.

Edit: Just to add, home values in my neighborhood have gone up exponentially since 2009, making some owners millionaires, at least on paper. My neighbors and I do talk about this, as we feel that we have won the lottery.
