When we recently applied for UK passport renewals for my daughters, it didn't look like they were going to come on time, so we applied for German passports.  The German passports  came in 3 weeks.  In the end the UK passport of one daughter arrived a couple of days before we travelled and for the other arrived 30 minutes before we left for the airport.  I would have quite happily let them travel on the German passports.  I will probably get a German passport in the future as it always gets stressful at renewal time.  And you can get a German express passport in 3 working days.  Our local Bürgerbüro knew when we were travelling and said if the passports weren't there a week before we travelled to give them a call and they would make sure they got there on time.

Wow, that is quick. I waited 7 weeks for my German ID card and 8 weeks for my German passport last time. I was told as well at the Stadtbüro not to book anything until they arrived back at the Stadtbüro.

What I think is good is that you get a letter when your ID card is ready to be collected at the Stadtbüro and with the Passport you can check online when it is ready to be collected.

Imagine, if someone packed a Durian on a hovercraft trip. There's no escape to the outside

My last memory of crossing the choppy Channel by hovercraft many many moons ago was suffering violently from the fragrance of of the posh stinky cheese I'd stowed under

Hehe, could have been worse, could have been Swedish Surströmming :P

When you make it to the end of the UK passport renewal application they ask for Visa or Mastercard no other options. I thought I could use my Australian MC but it was declined as it requires a one time code sent to your phone. Problem must be an Australian phone. You can call a friend which kind of defeats the purpose? What time is it there? 3.00am Good idea but I like my friends. They got me new DB debit MC card ordered, all passport data lost start again when it arrives.

My supervisor has reactivated your credit note

Well thanks for the tip, Chelski - I was a Gold Stena Extra member, back in the days before Covid, and had a good number of points, all dead, but some only dead since end of 2021, so after reading your story, I too phoned the lovely Mary, who is by now wise to your plan, and she gave me an email address so that someone else could deal with it ;)

That was Thursday. I did the email there and then, and this morning, when I'd about given up, I got an email telling me I had in fact been an idiot because they'd warned me at least twice that my points would expire, but Covid and Reasons and here's your most recent points resurrected.

Result

 I think it's 116 quid.

So worth it

Comfort cabin here we come!

And then that drive up to Sheffield instead of a nip over from Hull, thanks to P&O, but hey ho. I suppose we should keep the saved money for the extra petrol we'll be chugging :(

Danke nochmals.

10 week wait for a paassport?  Thats nothing - my wife has to wait 8 weeks to be able to visit our local so-called Bürgerburo in order to APPLY for a passport!

Whilst everything else has opened up the Rathaus folks have a great instrument to keep the plebs at bay (& the plebs accept this!).

10 weeks, sheer luxury, it took me 9 months to get an appointment to apply for my post brexit residents permit and a further 6 weeks after that before it was delivered!

It took me six weeks to get the appointment in Hamburg for my post-Brexit appointment. But I didn't turn up! I was in Greece and Covid flying restrictions plus the slow forwarded mail let me down! I came back to Hamburg - was it two or three times? The first time I turned up, it all went well. " Come back when we notify you."

So I did. " Ok, Mr Gunn, you can pick up your card when we notify you."

Back to Greece. Then they notified me by email.

Corona test, taxi 100 kilometres, flight to Hamburg and sorted.

Have the card in Greece as well. The policewoman gave me 5 years. " No problem, I'll be dead and won't need to renew."😂

Policewoman: " Please don't say that. You will be well."😂😂

I am between countries. Brexit is a pain but fortunately it will not matter for me personally anymore. I don't intend to set up residence in Luxemburg or Bulgaria or whatever. I feel sorry for young Brits.

Right...

9 months! Sheer luxury. I had to apply for a passport two years before I was born and still a twinkle in my mother's eye. Submit 15 applications from the womb, and then wait another 23 weeks after I was born to get a bloody appointment!

And if you leave France for more than 5 years hoping to return you lose your WA status and permanent residence. So you could end up having no permanent residence in a country your kids and grandchildren live.

And if you somehow manage to continue living abroad having lost WA residence status, forget annual increases in pension from HM Government. Goes down the pan too apparently.

Is it the same in Germany ?

Crazy. All that stuff opened up ages ago here. It's one of the niceties of not living in Berlin anymore: I can just go to the Bürgeramt and go straight in or wait maybe 5 minutes and be seen to. There is no appointment system because, well you never need one lol. Still prefer my Irish passport renewal though. Don't even have to leave the house to get pics taken and it arrives in less than a week.

Wow oh wow... yes Chelski. I feel your pain. As the Germans say "Fremdschämen", I see why the Australians nickname us "whingin Poms"

😳

Unsurprisingly, my nice new blue (it looks black to me and like a cheap forgery) passport arrived a week after I left for the uk.

Re processing times....It took 8 weeks from when I posted the old one back (7 from when it was received and signed for at HMPO) for the new one to arrive in my letterbox. The expired one has not yet been returned.
