Speedport W724v + Router

7 posts in this topic

Hello everybody.

My name is Gilles, A French guy of 23 Years old living in Weeze since 6 months (close to the Netherlands frontier,

1h from Dusseldorf).

I have signed a contract with T-online and I have a Speedport W724V. Everything is working well. (internet, telephone, etc).

My problem is: I have a more powerful router (a Netgear with a opensource firmware) and I would like to use my router instead of the T-Online one. In fact, I just want to :

- Or deactivate the router mode of the SpeedPort and use it ONLY as a modem

- Or Create a DMZ to my router

- Or deactivate the firewall/DNS/all other things

- Or open all the ports

I do not speak German for now, so, it's a bit difficult to understand the German forums (even with the approx. Google translate).

I saw in the settings menu ''Use device as a modem'' but in the help, the description is very strange, I didn't understood a word. I tried, but the ports are still closed.

Did someone done this?

Thanks by advance for helping me.

Regards,

Gilles

The W724V is actually a very good modem/router...

You can use the 724 as a modem only - see page 191 of the manual (where there are also lots of pictures :) )

If I follow the manual, I just have to check the thing page 191 (use device as a modem), that's it? Why the firewall is still active then? and ports are still closed?

I'm a bit lost, it's the first time that I have problem configuring a modem....

Assuming you have got into the setup menus, you simply click on the "Einstellungen" (at the top) and then on "Gerät als Modem nutzen" on the left side. Click on "weitere internetverbindungen zulassen" to allow up to 10 parallel dialups. The modem then becomes a PPPoE passthrough device.

Remember, however that you can't dial into a Telekom account more than once, so you will need to remove these details from the modem set-up so it doesn't initiate its own connection to the internet and the only connection is initiated by your Netgear.

See Speedport W723V Type B - SmartDNS Configuration for how you configure the login parameters using a Telekom online account.

The manual (bottom of page 191) specifically says "Information: the firewall function of your Speedport is not active when your device is connected to the Internet using the modem function. It is strongly recommended to use additional security when connected in this manner" (loosely translated)

Thanks for the update guys.

So I do not have to arse around with a router or try and get the recalcitrant Speedport to play ball.

I can simply configure the TV instead?

I am about to order the TV, I am now looking at a Samsung UE55F6500 unless someone tells me otherwise.

Cheers

Paul

i also have just installed a 724B , and the modem passthrough is no longer available (on latest firmware). is there any way to configure SMART DNS , within the router itself (or old firmware availability?)
