Hippodrom owner Sepp Krätz guilty of tax evasion

8 posts in this topic

Sepp Krätz, owner of the Hippodrom tent and manager of the popular Andechser am Dom and Waldwirtschaft, today was sentenced to 22 months on parole and fined a whopping €570,000 for tax evasion to the tune of €1.1 million – and the judge actually gave him a 50% discount on the fine because “your future as a restaurant manager is so uncertain”. Krätz, who has paid the evaded taxes and fully cooperated with the tax and investigative authorities prior to the trial, accepted the verdict, a plea bargain: He confesses to all charges and pays the taxes, in exchange he does not have to serve time. The prosecution had demanded 24 months on parole and a fine of €1.26 million.

Sepp Krätz, here with Richard Süßmeier who was kicked off the Oktoberfest in 1984 when a raid produced evidence of off-the-books staff working in the kitchen of his Armbrustschützen tent

But the jail sentence and the fine are not Krätz’ biggest concern: The city of Munich as approving authority has expressed grave doubts regarding his reliability as a restaurant manager and Oktoberfest tent manager. Dieter Reiter, currently Head of the Department for Labor and Commerce and as such head of the approval committee for the Oktoberfest, has already announced that he will not propose Krätz as one of the Oktoberfest tent managers. Since, unlike the other tents which are property of the breweries, the Hippodrom tent is owned by Krätz personally it is highly unlikely that it will be represented at the Oktoberfest – this year and for an indefinite time in the future as well.

He will in all likelihood lose his permit for the Andechser am Dom as well as for the Frühlingsfest, due to begin in four weeks; however, one of his daughters recently became co-shareholder of the Andechser am Dom limited company, and a close relative of Krätz has already applied for the permit to run it as well as the tent at the Frühlingsfest.

Wilfried Blume-Beyerle, head of the District Administration Office (KVR), says, “There is no kin liability regarding the restaurants”. On the other hand, restrictions will be imposed to prevent Krätz from exercising any influence on the locations, he will also be persona non grata in both the restaurant and at the Frühlingsfest.

Of course, this opens up a site for a new tent at the Oktoberfest, and at least four names have openly been discussed in the past few months. The managers of Der Pschorr, Zum Spöckmeier, Biergarten Lerchenau and various gastronomical locations at Munich’s Central Station as well as the zoo have allegedly handed in their applications. The decision will be made on 28 April and there will certainly be a mad scramble for reservations to be applied for, confirmed and fulfilled in four short months.

Krätz may be a crook and a short fused powder keg but he is a full-blooded Gastwirt. We met at the Independence Day party at the US Consulate last Thursday and he recognized me first. This guy saw thousands of people every year at his tent, recognizing someone in a different environment at least as a nodding acquaintance is quite an achievement.
