Usually the request is sent over the internet by logging into your account at sky.com..

The upgrade is usually done via the internet as data is communicated to sky.. version numbers etc etc...  Then the activation signal is sent via satellite

If you call sky.. they will usually do it the old fashioned way.

Many thanks, just what I needed to know.

Does anyone have a connection who could hook me up with sky via a satellite in Cologne? The quality of sky go is just painful.

You could try https://www.bavaria-satellite.de/

the guy who runs it, left TT a while a go, maybe he still does some work on these things

Seems like the address is not too far away from you

Wow, they are still around. I used this company many years ago, before giving up when Astra went to narrow beam over the UK and all the Skyboxes just stopped working.

Was a TopGear fan back then, but when Jermery left, was no longer a fun show.

Thankfully Amazon picked it up and did a similar, yet even more silly show.

Watched the Clarkson's Farm series the other week. Other than the 'Today Show' (https://www.zdf.de/comedy/heute-show/heute-show-vom-10-maerz-2023-102.html) I hardly find anything I regularly watch on German TV, despite having to pay the licence fee regardless.

Would imagine, up where you are, they are using Satellite dishes, down here in Munich, I would imagine they are using black market internet services, which are very plentiful, a lot are based in Spain and Ireland.

I thought it was still okay with a big enough dish. My Dad lives in the west of France and still has free-British telly with a sensible sized dish. Looking at the map he's actually bit south of Munich but obviously a lot further west.

I know a few people who have tried with a 2.5 meter dish, and could not get the BBC from 2014, when the coverage shrank. You can get it in Augsburg.

Munich is just a little outside the coverage, you can get it, a lot further south and only a bit further to the west. The beam is not round, its more like the UK, long but not very wide. As France sits just below the UK, it projects quite far down into France/Spain. Guess the next round of new Satellites will be launched soon, maybe the coverage area will change again.

Thankfully these days, there are plenty of providers offering high quality British TV over the internet for a price.

In the very early 1990.s, you could only pick up Sky channels on Satellite, but then there was no internet.

^ I thought UK Now TV or most UK pay TV over internet providers required a UK address registered credit card. Has this changed over last few years?

Even currys website only takes a UK address registered credit card EVEN IF you want products delivered as a gift to a UK relative. (no country drop-down list available, and defaults to UK for billing / credit card)

When I contacted currys cust svce about that, they gammonly said - more or less - foriners can't buy from us online, they must buy in person. Lol.

Ever since that fateful customer service encounter, whenever I'm physically in the UK and get pounced on by a sales assistant the moment I set foot in the store, I relay back to them my little story and, oddly, they shut up, stop trying to flog me something I don't want, and leave me alone to browse in peace :-)

<off-topic rant over>
