CR&Cie - Germany wide (health)insurance and investment advice for Expats

I want to #th this as well ;)

I was finally brought into more detailed financial decision-making by a bank offer. And while that is usually a risky place to start, I felt confident that I would clearly see the BS. That, unfortunately, was not the case. Whether the mucking about with numbers and recommendations was deliberate, or the consultants actually believed what they talked about, doesn't actually matter that much, as either is a bad sign.

I read many of Patrick's answers on this forum and realized through that that I may not have made the right decision. After a new discussion with the consultant, I asked Patrick directly. He responded to each of my questions in detail and even sent me a direct comparison so that I could see it for myself (something I tried to do myself before, but got confused by the jargon). Very personal, direct, and to the point. Highly recommended!

Hi Patrick,

I am sorry to be posting this on your board but am unable to send this as a form inquiry. I was referred to you and John as Toytown's "resident insurance brokers and honest to boot" in response to a query I had about private insurance carriers. With that in mind, if you have a moment, I would love your input and suggestions.

Briefly, we are a family of five planning a relocation to Frankfurt this summer. My husband is a freelancer and we understand that because of his status, we do not qualify for public insurance. Thus, we are researching our options for private insurance. Now, I have done quite a bit of research on this but would love some honest advice and guidance on a few things:

(1) am I correct in assuming that our only option is private insurance? I realize this will be expensive but as I understand it, we don't have much of a choice as we are required to have insurance coverage for each of our family members in order to obtain a working permit. Is that accurate? Do we have any other options?

(2) is there a way for me to obtain a list of private insurance carriers that offer coverage that meets the German law requirements? Also, the only insurance carrier of which we are aware is Expatriate Healthcare. Do you know anything about them? Do you have any recommendations for other carriers we can look into?

(3) we are all very healthy (thankfully) but I understand that there are certain things that may preclude people from getting insurance coverage at all (e.g. pre-existing conditions, asthma, if someone saw a mental health specialist at any point in time, etc.). Is there a list of the various conditions that would make it prohibitive for us to get insurance? Also, if one of us is precluded for some reason from getting coverage, does that mean that we are unable to work in Germany at all (e.g. we need insurance to get a working permit but we cannot get insurance because someone has asthma)? I'm somewhat confused about this requirement.

(4) I know the German health insurance requirements are quite complicated. Is there a site that offers consolidated information/guidance on how to proceed? My concern is that we are suffering from "I don't know what I don't know" syndrome.

I thank you in advance for your time and thoughts on this.

one of our advisors has replied to the OP by now- obviously the more detailed and personal it gets the less it belongs here... :-)

For those interested in our advice: we are now represented as a team/company with local advisors in Munich, Stuttgart and Berlin and travel regularily (about every three months) to Frankfurt and Dresden to meet clients. Obviously we cater to clients allover Germany, but some like to have a one-on-one meeting and in those areas this is easiest arranged.

Highly recommended.

He easily handled a complicated situation for me - I had private insurance in Germany, moved to Austria, went from a freelancer to an employee, and kept my apartment in Germany. He easily negotiated both systems, got me set up with a supplemental policy, and most importantly, was incredibly nice and responsive throughout a normally very slow process.

Thanks.

Hi,

I highly recommend CR & Cie. In December 2011 I was transferred from the US to Germany and my wife and I tried to get public insurance as my Company recommended us to do. After some frustrating attempts, Technische Krankenkasse indicated to us that we were not eligible because we had had insurance in the US and one of the prerequisites in our situation was not to have had private insurance before. After several weeks in Germany, without insurance, it was recommended to us (in Toytown Germany) to contact CR Cie. Patric and Erika wrote us back right away and provided us with all the documentation that we needed in order to get the best insurance according to our needs and preferences. I worked mostly with Erika Sümegi who impressed me very much with her great personal skills. She provided us with high level comparison tables, easy to read and understand, but with the right amount of data. Erika is a very personable professional and she excelled in answering avery question we had. She, as well as Patrick, are very knowledgeable about the legistation regarding insurances in Germany and we were very thankful for the help we were provided. After a few emails we felt very well informed and that made easy to make a decision. Erika and Patrick not only provided us with all the information but they also explained it to us in a very organized and precise way, so it was easy to understand. After a few months my Company closed the offices in Munich and my wife and I decided to return to the US. Erika helped us to terminate the contract with the insurance company. CR & Cie provided us with help not only during the process of obtaining an insurance but also after that, they were always willing to help and follow up. We are very thankful to CR & Cie and in particulat to Erika, one of the most friendly and affable persons I have ever met. Her positivity was comparable to the effect of a sunny day in the cold winter in Germany. Thanks CR & Cie and thanks Erika!

I can completely recommend C R & Cie. I am from the UK, and even though I worked in finance before moving to Germany, I was still confused by the many options for health insurance in Germany. I contacted Glyn Brookman at C R & Cie, and he talked me through ever step of the process.

In addition, due to my delay I was required by German law to backdate health insurance for any months that I was already a resident in Germany, and Glyn requested with the insurer that this was spread across my monthly premiums.

I cannot thank him enough for the time and effort that he took ensuring that I felt comfortable and reassured with the health insurance I bought. Many UK ex-pats lived only with the NHS for the whole of their lives and the thought of paying hundreds of euros per month for health insurance is very new to them, which was exactly the case for me. Even after my premiums had started to be collected, Glynn contacted me by email to ensure that all was correct, which is a truly professional after-sale service. Thanks again Glyn!

I had quite an unusual experience today 05.12.2013.

I share this experience out of appreciation for the great service I received and because I was not prompted to do so.

I thought it is the least I could do to give thanks for a job well done!

I asked a few people for objective advice on which health option to select.

The work done by Nora Ott of Chambervelt, Rooselain & Cie http://www.crcie.com was amazing.

Having worked in many countries with numerous business over a period of 25 years she ranks as a truly a world class service provider.

As a thorough subject matter expert, she quickly grasps the essence of a basic requirement and drills down efficiently with the right questions to reveal insight that no-one else could demonstrate in this very complex area of health insurance in Germany.

The turnaround time on presenting the relevant information required to make an informed decision was equally impressive - 24 hours!

This is a promise made on the website and a pleasantly surprising is honoured

Compared to some others, who could not see the wood for the trees and yet others who wanted weeks despite being told the urgency!

Beyond this though, I was delighted that the advice offered is truly objective.

I know this because the option recommended implied that no fees would be earned from the health insurer.

I was recommended to apply for statutory insurance and I am free to select whichever one I want and they would not know why or how they were selected. So there is no possibility of referral of business here.

When one has an excellent performer (rare) who also has the honesty and integrity of Nora (very rare) who takes a deep personal interest in a potential client (extremely rare) when they have nothing to gain is .... (I am at a loss for words) .... remarkable.

Thank you Nora!

Just want to put in my endorsement of CR and Cie as well.

Came here a few years ago (Australian), looked to get health insurance, looked here on TT and based on all the recommendations I picked them. Excellent work, very easy and quick, perfectly fitted to what I needed. So, naturally I came back to them this year when I learnt I also needed pension insurance as well. Patrick handled it for me almost overnight, so now they are covering all my insurance stuff in Germany, and sparing me a whole lot of headache. Highly recommended.

Thanks a lot, Pat and Nora!

I just set up an insurance through "C R & Cie" and would like to give my endorsement as well. My contact was with their Berlin branch and everything went smoothly. Communication was easy and punctual and I felt I was getting good advice, both on the insurance I took up and on others I will need in the future (thanks Keith!). I can only sincerely recommend Patrick and his team!

Hi Patrick,

I contacted you a while back regarding some insurances and I was very happy with the first response and emailed you back the answers to your questions straight away.

Unfortunately since then I haven't had a response to any of my emails.

Everywhere I look I see glowing reviews (and I can see why as your initial response was fantastic) so I've started to think my emails must be going astray.

Could you please look into it for me and let me know? I'm more than happy to resend any information.

Many thanks and regards,

Joe

Hi,

just wanted to add here, that a number of my clients use the services of Patrick Ott and are very happy. It strikes me as very unusual that he would ignore requests. May well be that IT plays tricks on him. No panic!

Hi Harish - I am sorry, but the currently rampant flue going around has also severly hit our office, we are down to 50% staff capacity right now. Hence the current delays in some replies.

Even though I will try to answer your last email from Saturday today or tomorrow.

Thank you for your understanding and patience

I've already gotten good advice and prompt email answers from Startshollow, so I'm glad it's "just" the flu.

In fact, I'll be contacting him again after the epidemic tapers off. Me needs money.:)

Hello,

I have created an account here just to highly recommend CR&Cie, Pat and Nora.

I moved from the public health insurance to a private one. I thought it will be quite an easy process, but it proved to be much more complicated than I thought. Pat and Nora were really supportive, fast and pro active and found all the needed solutions to all issues. Many thanks one more time and I strongly advise anybody in Germany in need for insurance to use CR&Cie's service.
