English speaking jobs in the Fichtelgebirge area?

3 posts in this topic

New user here.

I come from the USA (Washington State) have been living in the Fichtelgebirge area (near Wunsiedel) since 2012. In August, I finished my German language class (with a B1 in all sections) and in early October, I finished the German integration class. This means, I am "ready" for work. However, trying to find work in this area when you are not a native German speaker is hard. I have a Bachelor's Diploma, but in an area that is a little too "American specialized" for this area, at least (Criminal Justice. When I was in college, I had no idea I would be living here.) I have decent working experience, mainly in the "Social Work" field (my last job was as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor.) However, that also seems to be a bit too "American specialized." I've been to the Arbeitsamt, and they're nice, but don't really seem to know what to do with "someone like me."

If it were just me, the logical thing would be to move to a larger, more English-speaking area, like Munich. However, my husband works in Oberpfalz and we don't want to lose his stable income.

I plan to look in Weiden, which is "commutable" from my Husband's work. However, would anybody know of ANY kinds of jobs in such areas as Wunsiedel, Marktredwitz, Selb, etc where English (and B1 German) could be utilized? I would really appreciate any information.

Thanks!

As you've already realised, your degree will not get you far in Germany. Furthermore, Sozialpädagoge/in and Sozialarbeiter/in are regulated professions for which you need specific qualifications (see Berufliche Anerkennung for more info).

Moving would not make it easier to find a job in your field.

You can try the local temp agencies for unskilled positions. If you'd like to work as a social worker, continue with your German classes and study here (social workers are currently in demand in Germany). If you don't know what you'd like to do, I'd strongly recommend consulting a Migrationsberatungsstelle near you for advice.

Hi, you could also try to get something with the U.S. military like https://www.usajobs.gov/JobSearch/Search/GetAdvancedResults for example or http://de.jobrapido.com/Security-Jobs-in-Grafenw%C3%B6hr or http://www.star-security.de/ or http://www.pond-security.com/. Although Security jobs don't really pay well, it is just a suggestion that maybe with your education it could get you a respectable position. Good luck.
