well the area itself is... safe...but there will be nothing open at 2 a.m., that is of course not a shocker.

Perhaps you could call a hotel and ask if they would cut you a deal to hang out in the lobby or something, or maybe an air bnb?

Trust buv there is plenty open

Used to go into McDonalds in the Hbf most weekends when it would be open to at least  3.30-4 .00.  Never had any problems.

Hamburg Altona,

Although the thread title is HB HBF, the current enquiry is for HB Altona, which is a different place and therefore not the same ;)

Perhaps you could practice singing 'Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins' and earn cash as a busker while waiting😉

A Reeperbahn is a special long narrow building where ropes are made. Doubtless most of us know that already.

The Reeperbahn in Hamburg is more of a place where you'll find new and unusual uses for ropes.

Rope manufacture no longer takes place on the Hamburg Reeperbahn.

But whenever there is an Open Day or Hafentag in Hamburg, a local museum of Maritime history wlll

set up a reeperbahn to show how ropes used to be made. And jolly interesting it is too.

Regarding Altona Station

Koz Urfa : http://kozurfa.de/ is open until 3am, and their Döner is great btw :D

Then the 3 bakeries and ReWe to Go open at 5 am

If it was weekend you could go to Erika's Eck until 5am : http://www.erikas-eck.de/

Having said that,  Altona train station is quite quiet ,and not particullary shady (but I haven't been there that late).
