Annual English Book Sale for Charity

For the past few months, we've been busy sorting and pricing books, DVDs and magazines and getting ready for our annual English Book Sale. For those of you unfamiliar with our sale, this is a charity event to raise money for humanitarian projects in Ilembula, Tanzania. All year, we accept donations of the above items and then sell them at a giant sale. Last year we had roughly 10,000 items for sale and raised over €7,000.

 

All proceeds from the sale go to support the projects, which include:

- providing school uniforms and supplies to approx. 500 AIDS orphans

- helping the AIDS self-help group establish a small business renting out chairs and tents for weddings

- funding the construction of biogas (methane) stoves to reduce deforestation

- covering the cost of transporting donated children's shoes to the AIDS orphans and chairs for their after-school care center

- purchasing special braille paper for the school for the blind

- paying the tuition fees for two kindergarten teachers

 

The sale will be:

Friday, October 11, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and

Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

 

The sale is held in the community center of the Jesuskirche Haar, which is located at Waldluststrasse 36 in Haar, just a 10 minute walk from the S-bahn in Haar. To view a map: www.jesuskirche.de/kontakt

 

At the sale, we serve homemade cake and coffee/tea, provide free childcare (so you can browse leisurely) and have a comfortable seating area where you can chat with friends or look at books.

Did you know that the English Book Sale now has a Facebook page? We've been posting sneak previews of some of the donations that have been rolling in ;-)

 

Amazingly, it looks like we'll hit or top last year's record of 10,000+ items. So if you love to read, this is one sale you won't want to miss :-)

 

This year we volunteers will be wearing tunics of Tanzanian fabric so that we're easier to spot if you have any questions or need assistance.

We'd like to (belatedly) thank everyone who came to our English Book Sale. You're all wonderful - thanks for coming! The sale was a big success, and in the coming months we'll see which projects in Ilembula, Tanzania we can support with the book sale's proceeds in addition to the roughly 500 AIDS orphans we support with school uniforms and supplies. The AIDS educational center that we helped fund with last year's proceeds is already holding classes on AIDS prevention and providing self-help support to those who are HIV-positive.

 

In the coming months, we'll be reporting on the projects we'll fund with this year's proceeds. Communication with Ilembula is sometimes slow, due to language difficulties and the scarcity of internet access, so bear with us. In the meantime, there's lots of information and pictures on our Ilembula website.
