The game of "Stadt-Land-Fluss"

15 posts in this topic

I do not know if the game exists in English speaking countries, but it goes like this:

There are four main categories but they can be extended. The main categories are name, plant, animal and city. Each player has a pen and paper. A random letter is selected and each player writes down a name, plant, animal and city starting with that letter. At the end of the round, for each category, if you are the only person to come up with what you have written, you get 10 points, if other people used the same name (or city, or animal, etc.), you get five points.

Sound familiar?

HOW IS THE BLOODY GAME CALLED???

Indeed, "Stadt-Land-Fluss" is a great educational game and I often use it to teach languages. My children love playing this game, which requires fast and varied thinking. Whenever a teacher is missing, classmates enjoy filling an empty hour with it, so it is well-known throughout German schools.

What sarabyrd and sun-by said. Not exactly the same categories, but the same idea. Played it with the young 'un to get both our Deutsche up to snuff. Goes without saying I was regularly trounced after the first few goes.

The game Scategories is a like City-Country-River - only you get a fancy dice with all the letters of the alphabet on it, snazzy question and score cards ... and a timer that scares the shit out of you when it goes off.

It's called categories game in the US, but there isn't even a Wikipedia Page about it, so I guess it's now that popular? There is a page for Scattergories (a Categories Game by Hasbro). In Germany Stadt, Land, Fluss is often played with all kind if categories by young people. They use Band Names, Brands, Actors, Car manufacturers, etc...
