Where to get a kitten

82 posts in this topic

Okay so I know where to go here in Munich to adopt a cat. And I have done a search but none of the topics answer the question I have. What costs or procedures does one go through in order to get a cat from a rescue shelter? Is it easy enough where I can go on Saturday and take it home the next day?

A friend of mine adopted a cat from the Tierheim in Riem about 5 years ago. She was all prepared to take it with on Saturday when the employee said that she had to prove ID, meaning that we came back again on Sunday with ID, cat-carrier and - I think - DM 40 to cover admin costs. Make sure your lease states that you are allowed to have a pet/pets, and make the place cat safe (net on the balcony if you have one). Cats are more social than you think, and generally the Tierheim won't give away single cats or separate cats which have got used to each other.

Hey, want a big black Tom for free? Only condition: Visiting rights for my daughter. He and the small cat are in a constant state of warfare and I wouldn't mind a night's sleep not interrupted by a hissing, growling and chasing fit at 2 am.

Hi Caesar, I don't know what happens at a Tierheim in terms of adopting a cat, but if you don't find one and want to adopt a kitten in the springtime, just let me know. The farm across the street never gets his cats fixed (male or female) and there are always kittens in the springtime. This is where I scooped up my little cutie:

Yes, I will keep an eye out for them. All the kitties from this farm turn out OK. Poopy (that's her name, boyfriend named her) is a really sweet little cat and so are the others (ask DDBug - she has 2 and Kat - she took one).

We just got the black girl (Tia) fixed last week. (cost about 100 including everything) They are sweet, but I think we got them a bout 1 week too old since they are indoor cats only - smart though. We have to really be careful what we put where.

They grey boy (no longer a tom) is about twice the size of the black one.

@kitkat: Count me in, too. Moscia, my old cat (17), is on her last legs (has been for 2 years) and I will need a replacement soon, especially if Caesar takes Hexi off my hands. Emily would appreciate a younger playmate, she's had kittens herself.

DDBug, were they friendly at the Tieheim. We're thinking of getting 2 new rescus cats now that Stella and Bärli are in pussy heaven but our vet Dr Lerchl said not to got to the Tierheim at Riem.

There is a Tierheim just for cats out here in Moosach. They're really friendly there. As I recall, the procedure is pretty much what sarabyrd described, except I think the fee was 40 euros (we got two cats). It was pretty simple. We were able to take the cats home that day. I can't remember what paperwork we *had* to have, but we brought our IDs and residence permits and I think maybe a letter from our landlord saying we could have cats but we didn't need all of those things. (We were just trying to be prepared for anything, having had our share of experiences with paperwork in Germany before). After a couple of weeks, someone came to visit our cats in our house and make sure they were doing ok.

This thread needs more photos of cats:

Look in the local papers like Kurz & Fündig and Hallo, although I don't think it's quite the right time of year for tiny kittens. Visit the Tierheime - if you do a search you'll find them mentioned on this website more than once. As for buy, I assume you mean for exotic kitties? Then maybe buy one of the cat magazines for ads from breeders. You normally don't actually pay for what they call 'house' cats here, but it's usual to pay a 'Schutzgebühr' to cover the cost of vaccinations, and to show you're serious. There may be 'Platzkontrolle', meaning that you will be visited spontaneously a while after you have acquired the kitty. Good luck!

Hope someone can help me here... I've been assigned the task of looking for a kitten for some friends of mine... Now I thought it was going to be easy.. but it isn't , I checked out the Kürz und Fuendig site... and that was mainly a load of people searcing for kittens, not actually selling them.. then, google nicely sent me to a muenchen.kijijiji something site.. which had kittens on there, but the owners were charching in excess of 250 Euros for the little moggies.. which I think is a bit steep.

Is it possible to buy a kitten in Munich for under 100 Euros? If so how? and where from?

Is anyone selling, or know somebody who is selling or giving away any kittens at present?

If so could you please let me know.. I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you in advance for anybody who wishes to help me out on this one...

Lou
