Moving to Munich and my situation is unique

If I could work 100% from home, I wouldn't look any further than Miesbach / Schliersee / Tegernsee / Lenggries / Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

@ coolness.personified: I note your profile says you're Australian. Do you have another (EU) citizenship you haven't mentioned? Germany doesn't necessarily make it easy for non-EU citizens to move to Germany.

Did you actually take time to read his post..

He said that he lives in the east and owns his home....

Yes, I did read his post. Entirely. But I have must have missed the part where he specifies it's the East of any specific country he's referring to.

In fact, it could be the Naher Osten, the Middle East, the Far East... he calls it the EAST like it's some mythical place.

Agree with the frollein - to me it's not clear either, so the visa situation is also one to look at.

I assume you also know you need health insurance (which can be costly - lots of threads on that) to live here - you mention "us", so unless you are married (i.e. not common law, which is not recognised in Germany), you both have the visa issue and the health insurance as separate people (i.e. even if you can get a self-employed visa to do your work abroad, your partner will need his/her own reason for moving to Germany...coming to be with you won't work).

All your income will also be taxed in Germany.

On the apartment front, be aware that offering extra under the table and/or offering cash upfront are not really items which count here, and are not really done. You could probably try Mr Lodge, which offers furnished places for short-term stays. Once on the ground and with the other issues settled, you can start looking around for a larger, more expensive place. I think your price ideas for a larger place are somewhat low (1500€ warm is more likely than 1000€ for that size place), but you may get lucky...who knows. Sometimes people find a place in Munich in under 6 months - sometimes (often) they don't. Compromising (in terms of cost as well as location, kitchen, etc...) helps.

Although, as a long time lurker, surely you're fully aware of all these issues since they are topics which come up on a daily basis.

Looks like Mr Lodge is the winner.. crazy the amount of fees.. but not much you can do I guess. :)

You give the impression that money is no issue so let me update your price expectations thru a Mr Lodge rental. I was paying 1290 for a 57sqm 1 room in Sendling at Implerstrasse 3 stops from Sendlinger Tor or a 30 min walk. The new tenant will be paying 1350.

I almost took another place in Obergiesing 82sqm for 1750. Not the best location but a good commute. I was only considering it because I just couldn't find anything else reasonable & didn't want to go with the hotel option (or live in a tent on Isar)for an unlimted time.

So if city center is your ultimate goal I suggest you either take your budget estimates way up or your sqm requirements way down. Neither are currently realistic.

Can anyone advise me how can I find a job in Munich? Soon I will move there suddenly for personal reasons, for a long time, but do not speak even conversational level.

I am an economist, and in particular, a make-up artist. I am aware that not knowing german yet it'll be hard to find something, but to learn the language must have contact with people, to have challenges every day.

Thank you all in advance for any help.

Thank you all for the feedback. As I stated the first few months living in a shoe box is not an issue.

I will take into consideration the comments and adjust my strategy accordingly.. thanks Spider for the useful PM

I've worked in the financial markets for many years & have never come across an economist who specializes in make-up so maybe you can start your own niche.

Regarding a job search the usual ways work here...

Networking is by far the best way. Set up a Xing & LinkedIn profile to make yourself more visible. You can also search for local jobs on Indeed.

Strangely enough somebody on TT just posted a job at a cosmetics company minutes ago. Check under the employment offered section.

Mr Lodge are VERY good. They are also VERY expensive. That's partly why they are good, but also mainly why they can quickly offer a solution.

I think you misunderstood about the business of taking years to find a place, coolness. We weren't referring to companies like Mr Lodge, homecompany etc who don't deal in permanent apartment contracts, but in temporary lodging, where you pay a lot more commission. Of course you ccan find a place through them quickly - bnut they aren't a long-term solution. People take places from Mr Lodge, partly because it is so difficult to find a "real" place.

Mr. Lodge is indeed very good.

I pay around 200 euro premium on my flat (meaning more than it is actually worth), but I am happy - been there for 2 years.

I met so many people that tried Munich for 3 months and then just gave up because they could not find housing and others that are already in the 3rd shared room.

Yeah, I could do a lot of things with these 200 euro, but just the peace of mind of not having to fight with 100 people, worry about moving, have an interview for a flat and end up in a shithole is worth.

Btw, the commission on Mr. Lodge is lower than the usual Makler... just saying.

Yep paying slightly more to get something in 5 minutes in the area you want is far better waiting months couch surfing only to live on someone's living room floor in a crap part of town. But have an extra 200 a month :) München here we come

What does your husband do? How well does your husband speak German? Will you be provided with relocation assistance? Will you earn enough to support the whole family?

Hello to everyone,

I am an Italian engineer, moving next week to Munich for work.

I have been browsing a little on the net to gain information on what to do when moving to Munich, but I feel a little bit confused and I would like your help!

First of all, when downloading the form for the address registration ( from munchen.de), I do not know the meaning of the religion codes. Could someone explain them to me? I would like to avoid paying extra taxes so I would like to declare no religion.

Also, regarding the Tax ID, is there any English form I could use to ask for it? Could anyone explain me in details the steps to do to obtain a Tax ID number?

Thank you very much!
