Best place to live for family if kids go to MIS?

5 posts in this topic

I am likely going to be taking a job in Munich in the next few months and moving from the US. I expect that my kids 9 (girl) and 11 (boy) will go to MIS in the fall. From my experience I've found that at this time of life with grade school kids the social scene revolves around the school, sports, friends of our children and their parents. Therefore I'd like to try and live in an area close to MIS where there are 4th and 6th grade parents living nearby, if not living right in my neighborhood. So looks like Gauting, Feldafing and other small towns around the area on the train route near Starnberg look good. I've heard mixed things about Starnberg itself as being filled with a lot of retirees...that doesn't really bother me as long as their are family friendly neighbors with some kids from MIS. Ideally something on the train route as we will only have 1 car and I will use this to get to/from work in Munich and the airport.

Does anyone in TT have kids this age at MIS and do you have any recommendations where to live this fall? My kids may like to join the MIS ski team as well so not sure if there is any location where there is a core group of skiing MIS families living. Anyway, cost of living is not a problem, most important is I want to be in a neighborhood that is social where my kids and play after school with other kids and where the adults are friendly, easy to meet, arrange dinner parties, etc. Any suggestions?

Hi Kiter

our daughter is still to young, but we decided to live in Solln as she will go to the MIS. There is a school bus arranged from the MIS leaving at the corner.

We wanted to be well connected to the city centre but yet have a garden and be close to MIS.

I personally know other families living in Gruenwald or by Goetheplatz. All their kids take the school bus and do not seem to be bothered with the travelling.

So my advice is checked the area served by the bus and then make sure you are well connected to the public transport.

Good luck

Italianmum - Solln looks like a good location. I suppose we need to figure out what we want more city life or suburb life. Right now we are in Silicon Valley California living in the suburbs and in a really great neighborhood. All of the schools are walking distances (kids are in 3rd and 5th grade) and the neighborhood is filled with lots of their friends, they have spontaneous play dates all the time and the parents are also very social -- lots of dinner parties, block parties, going to the pub for a beer, ski trips, hikes, etc. My main fear of moving to the Munich area is that I end up in a neighborhood and my family is very isolated and that it is difficult to cultivate friendships/social activities. I feel like if I can live in a neighborhood where a lot of other families of MIS 4th and 6th graders live it will make it easier. But perhaps the nature of the school is such that everyone is completely spread out.

Have you found it easy to meet other families in Solln? Do others have good stories of moving to Munich for 1 or 2 years and successfully meeting other families?

I can second Solln as a great place...I still live there and sent my stepson to MIS for 2 years while he was living here in Germany. As mentioned, the bus drops/picks up directly at the cul-de-sac on BichlerStr. where it passes by the Solln S-Bahn station.

As far as social scene in Solln, I meet with 5 or 6 different families in the neighborhood relatively frequently for spontaneous (yes, they are German) dinner/parties...also, we have an annual Summerfest, a Slyvesterfest, and a Tanzfest at the Loft...

Hope that helps.
