Starting up again, I have had a couple of calls with a Belgium country code(0032)  this week in English but not a sub-continent accent or claiming to be from Microsoft but same old scam as far as I could tell before hanging up!

Watch out.

I had one yesterday (cue Indian accent): I'm calling you about your Windows 10 PC...

Calling number displayed as 0331636473

I put on my best Indian accent (although some claim it sounds more Irish): I'm using Solaris / Unix (which used to be true some years ago).

If i had thought a bit quicker I should have given him a stern lecture that people in Germany actually speak German & that he could stuff his scam where...

I got a call from them again the other day. She just kept reading off the script, so I told her to get to the point and that I know she was reading a script. She then told me, “get lost, idiot.” 🤣

Busy cooking, with the phone on speaker, I kept asking which of my  computers had this 'problem'. I stayed in German of course. They passed me on several times to a different language expert.

After a while they gave up.

Later they called back. I simply hung up. (Dinner was ready)

Indian-accented lady this morning on my Greek landline: " hello, I'm calling from Microsoft about your computer."

" I've already chosen my curry recipe for today, thanks."

She hung up!

Caller: I'm from Microsoft

Me: the police told me to record these

calls. I'll  just start the recorder

Caller: I don't care about that. I need your IP

Me: just a moment, the recorder needs to

        be running

Caller: just give me the details of your computer

Me: <hangs up>

They're baaaaackk! Got a call on my mobile this afternoon, south-Asian accented man (German tel #) telling me he was from Microshaft.

Me: Sie rufen Deutschland an. Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

Him: Do you have a computer, sir?

Me: Sie rufen Deutschland an. Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

Him: (pause) deush...ah! (hangs up)

10 minutes later, his female colleague from Heraklion (JohnG, does Nicole have a side job?) called and spoke in very poor, recited German.

Me: Does your mother know you're a criminal?

Her: Sorry?

Click.

When I get a call like these, I ask if they could wait just a minute.  I then put the phone down and wait for them to hang up.  Waste their time.

It doesn't seem to matter though what tricks get played on these scammers. they continue to peddle the same old rubbish with their very annoying phone calls. I really can't believe there is anyone left anywhere in the world who would still fall for this, it is such a well known scam. I can only hope there are criminals out there making money from the scammers by periodically selling them lists of telephone numbers with promises they will make a fortune with the scam. That is maybe why we see a cyclic tendency with these calls, lots of effort and hope at first then giving up when they realise they have bought a lemon.

I can assure you that a certain number of people fall for these scams each year. The scammers would not continue with this trick if it did not bring money to them every year. If they stopped making money on this scam then they would stop doing it and find another way to take cash of you.

I suspect, they employ young students to play this scam, when the students get annoyed with us they leave, the scammers just get another student to carry on the scam.

No matter how cleaver you are with them, they know there is a certain percentage of calls they make will result in them getting some money.

There's a few White Hats out there fighting back.

Pierogi is one of the best.

Randomly picked video from his YouTube feed but they're all worth watching.

No mercy. Scammer Payback.

Brilliant guy! What amazes me is when he calls victims and he doesn't give his name or say who/ what he  is and the people accept him happily!

That wouldn't happen in Germany where people answer a call with their surname and the caller gives their name.

There has been a spat of shock callers recently in Bayern. Call an elderly person, say that they are from the police and that their grandkid or whatever had caused an accident and that a sum is required to get them bail.

The largest one was over a hundred thousand in damages. I would so like to get my hands on one of them.

These are really nasty and I heard in the UK the scammers will tell the victim to call the police to confirm, apparently if a caller does not hang up the connection remains open and they will then fake a 999 response which is very convincing! Not sure if that works on the German land line system or not, anyone know?

I can except that but how come they keep calling the same numbers with the same tired old Microsoft scam, where people play tricks on them or tell them where to go, that means they are wasting a huge amount of time trying to find a needle in a haystack. If it was always the same scammers you would think they would have a means edit out the numbers where they are wise to them!

Yes, that is the same in Germany on a landline. The 'enkelkinder' scams here in Germany do the same thing and it's recommended to wait 5 minutes after hanging up on your landline before dialing another number as the connection isn't completely broken as soon as you hang up.
