Fare share or not GEZ still brings in Billions of Eur a Year.. For more than they need. And as other have stated before

if the GEZ $ is to pay for programming, then why do the stations which get the $ still have Commercials/Advertisements.

That's clearly double dipping in my book.

I agree. On the other hand, there are loads more commercials in the U.S. where there is no such fee. So many that I find TV to be unwatchable when I am there.

The same could be said of cable/satellite TV, you pay a subscription yet still have to put up with adverts...

Perhaps, but with cable/satellite I have the OPTION of signing up for the service. With GEZ you have NO OPTION... Big Difference

GEZ Money is supposed to fund TV stations so they don't have to go out and get Advertisers. Yet, these stations do so anyway.

Where as with Cable/Sat service you are paying for the service and the money goes to the providers for providing that service.

Not so the channels offered are Commercial free.

I've often fantasised about somebody taking this to court. Putting up a portable billboard, and then trying to charge the judge and lawyers a fee for viewing the billboard.

To illustrate the absurdity of sticking something on the internet and then charging everybody because they might view it.

As others have pointed out, pay to view is a well established concept for (porn)companies who want to charge for their content.

Or cinema, or magazines, or DVDs or well, lots of other things.

I dont have a TV and Im not keen to pay for a license. Im also not too pleased that my rent includes a contribution for some kind of TV service (not sure what, as I dont have a TV to connect, I presume its satalite thats already something like 20 euros a month).

One thing is that with the changes in technology, online streaming, mobile, laptops used to watch DVD and so forth, the definition of a "TV" is becoming quite meaningless. So rather than pay per device, I tihnk it is inevitable that we move to charge either by person, by household or pay per use, where pay per view is the "fairest" way. Im not convinced however that a technological solution (log in to watch) will work any better than the current system, or that the bajillions of euros that would inevitably be handed over to IBM or someone to implement it would be worth it.

Yes, a worldwide BBC (or GEZ for the Germans) license fee or similar would be nice, but we all know the legal issues of balkanisation of broadcasting rights etc...

So my view is, oh well shit happens but I dont really see an alternative. Just another tax or cost of living in germany, like the solidarity charge and so on.

Hi all. So now the day has come...

I have a specific question about how to proceed: I have never been on any GEZ list up until now - never received a single letter from them (opted out of data-sharing @ Anmeldung). Am I now obliged to go to their website and register myself? Or should I wait until they find me? (I would imagine I shouldn't wait too long since I am still obliged to pay as of today.)

How do they get thir list of households and people in charge of each household? From the mailboxes, Anmeldung, property register?

So it will be interesting to see if the opt-out at Anmeldung continues to protect a person's details (as opposed to them now getting a new list with ALL names). I will post here if I do get a letter in the next few weeks/months.

But assuming I don't, is waiting (+ keeping under the radar) really a viable option? How steep would the late fees if/when they do find out?

Nope, the GEZ always had access to all addresses, opt-out or not. Didn't count for them.

I've never heard of "the opt-out at Anmeldung". Does that mean that you are unregistered?

If so, you may have bigger fish to fry than GEZ late fees.

A person is still registered but as far as I know there's an option to make your address inaccessible to certain organizations. The GEZ isn't one of them.

I was referring to an extra form that you hand in when you register. If you want it, you have to ask for it by name (they are not forthcoming about it) but they are required to provide it. The Munich one is called "Antrag auf Speicherung von Übermittlungssperren". It's basically an official objection to them selling/giving your data anyone else. I was of the impression that this was the reason the GEZ never contacted me in the first place, but I could be wrong on that count - maybe I just got lucky.

As westvan noted, the opt-out for distributing your data only applies to commercial entities. The GEZtapo (or whatever they're calling themselves nowadays) are a semi-state organization and have always had access.
