Moving to Flensburg area

10 posts in this topic

Hello all!

We're a family of 3 + dog planning a move to the Flensburg area (currently we're in Nürnberg) and are looking for advice, recommendations, and friendly chat -- the kinds of things newcomers need! I've looked at the other threads on Flensburg but they're a bit old or unrelated, so I thought a new thread would be better than tagging onto an old one.

My husband and I will be in Flensburg July 26-29 to look at houses in the area and get a better look at the town and surroundings. We've only been once, last August, on the way to Denmark, and I was also there a couple weeks ago for my job interview at the Uni.

If you have any pointers for me or would like to get together for coffee while we're househunting, just send me a PM.

Thanks!

I really dont know much about Flensburg although having been there a few times I think its probably a good place to live (certainly a good place to party). Friends of ours live just outside in Harrislee, which seems a nice residential area, if thats any good to you.

Flensburg - lucky you!!!

It's a great place to live, I lived there quite a few years back, can't say if much has changed though since then, but I loved it there, it is such a beautiful little town with quaint little alleys and side-streets. (and a great Pita at Papas Imbiss beside the harbour (if I recall the street was called "Schiffbrücke ")

What you looking for? incredibly pretty, incredibly remote, lovely people, awesomly friendly, but nothing to do...

NB: I work in Kiel, but i have many friends who live around Flensburg. Its a place where "once you are in, you are in", but it is VERY VERY quiet and VERY remote....

Flensburg is about the farthest North you can get in Schleswig-Holstein without landing in Denmark - some might say its an advantage to be able to pop over the border. I'm at the other end of SH...

You will certainly find a contrast in the weather - Franken is considered to belong to the dryer areas of Germany whilst in Flens you'll probably find it cooler in Summer, maybe not so cold in Winter (unless we get the Siberian Blast) and certainly more WINDY. If you're into sailing & other water sports probably a good area. The whole of SH is a horsey area as well.

You'll have a decent Autobahn connection to Hamburg. Maybe you'll be looking towards Scandinavia for vacations...

I understand quiet and remote. I grew up in a small town in an "unfashionable" area of the US, and we aren't the type of people who want to go out and party all the time.

I've been researching the area as much as possible via the Interwebs, and found a larger grocery (Real), an English Pub (McMelson), likely Gymnasium (Fördegymnasium) for my daughter, etc. Oh, and that we'll have to go to Hamburg for movies in English.

I just like finding out as much as possible coming into a situation. We'll be there at least 4 years, my daughter will finish her Abitur there, and my husband wants to start on German lessons before looking for work for himself.

I saw the post for meetups in Kiel, but are there any in Flensburg? Anyone wanting to start up dinners, pub nights, or cookouts in the Flensburg area? We're really keen on connecting with other English speakers with similar interests, since we're leaving our Nürnberg friends behind.

Any recommendations other than the obvious for rental houses? Better/worse areas as far as convenience, transportation, etc? (I've been told by folks at the Uni that west of Flensburg is better than east of Flensburg as far as transport goes)

I'm looking just as much (or more) to make connections with folks who are already in the area as I am to get advice about the city and area itself.

Hi,

I'm a 29 year old Australian living in Flensburg. I've been here for about 3 years, so feel free to ask if you have questions. There are quite a few English speakers living here and we do get together from time to time, so hopefully we can meet up for coffee sometime.

Cheers,

Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,

Thanks! We're moving the last week of September, and I'm looking forward to learning the town and meeting new people!

Hi Techgirl

Did you find a place to live and was Flensburg all you imagined it to be? I see you were only planning to be resident a limited time, before moving on to pastures greener. Are you still around or have you left? My partner and I have been here on and off since the naughties, but only just venturing out again following COVID. Did you find a circle of friends and settle well? I guess your daughter has not only passed her Arbitur, but has graduated from College by now..! So time flies.

Meanwhile a lot of networking has moved over to other social media, so I expect you have found like-minded friends via Facebook etc. wherever you now live and work. For latecomers to the thread, they should take heart that there is more to do in Flensburg than first meets the eye. After all, we live where others come on holiday and take their vacation! Water sports are the biggest but not only attraction. Keep an eye on the 51 Stufen Kino as well as the main Cinema for films occasionally shown in the orginal language as well as live performances transmitted from stage productions in the UK and USA. A bowling centre has also opened since your original post.

Either way, there are worse places to live. :D
