@ clepto

i do tend to lose a few inhibitions when i'm sozzled, much to my chagrin at times, but i've never let that one slip

you'll just have to imagine what it could be, that's much more fun, i'm sure :)

if I had a daughter, I would name her Nova - that way, at least the spanish speaking boys would get the idea.

Good you said boys. Here is a spanish speaking girl who has no idea what you meant.

My cousin named her 3 daughters Orenda, Aurelia and Rhapsody. Pretentiousness runs in the family.

ORENDA? poor girl :( . Lets hope she never has to live in a latin language based country...

I've always understood it meant doesn't go. The name Vauxhall Nova wasn't used for the opel version because of this, or at least that's the story. Obviously a load of bollox! :D

it is apparently colloquial to USA/Mexico and not standard spanish.

edit: and I think that the story you are referring to is about the Chevy Nova which suffered bad sales in California, iirc.

A friend of friend was called "Storm" although as a statuesque, long haired beauty she seemed to carry it off.

I believe some countries have laws which stop you registering children with inappropriate names. I have been told that Iceland goes as far as only allowing you to register your child with an approved Icelandic first name, but my source on this is not too reliable.

As far as combinations go, the worst one I can think of was a South African presenter called "Scot Scott". That was his real name.

I belive you are living in one of those countries. If you want to give your child a non-German name you have to prove that the name exists (ie you just can't invent one)

I knew a Storm as well, great guy. I also have friends who've named their children Cloud (boy) and November (girl)

That reminds me... There's an actor named Campbell Scott I think (in Roger Dodger, great flick). Always sounded a bit backwards to me.

I believe John Wayne is actually a Marion or something. In Munich, dunno about the rest of the country, the gender of the child must be clear to see in the name. Try calling your son Marion Francis Leslie. It wouldn't be accepted as far as I know. Throw in a John and Bob's your uncle. At least I knew what I wanted to say in my head. Hope this makes sense.

A name has to be recognizable as to the child's sex here, then you can tack on just about anything not offensive. One couple got a court order so that they could name their kid Pumuckl. My favorite is Miriam Irimi, she should be about 20 now.

bingo. No-Va = no go.

urban legend (or Truth?) is that the Chevy Nova had very poor sales in mexico when first introduced there in the 70's or so, which was attributed to the name as it is understood in (apparently) mexican-spanish. No Go.
